Before deciding which off-campus study program you will apply to, it's important to make sure the program is a good fit for you and can provide the support you will need when studying off campus. Skidmore has over 120 off-campus study programs, with many options for all majors and minors. Consider some of these guiding questions as you think about your program options.

  • What are your academic goals while on a program?
  • How does studying off campus work into your major and minor requirements?
  • What are your personal goals for the semester?
  • What are your professional goals and how can going off campus help you achieve these goals?
  • Do you want to learn or continue learning a foreign language? 

Program

What type of program is the best fit for you?

  • Are you more comfortable in a larger university or with a smaller cohort of students?
  • Do you want a traditional classroom setting or field-based coursework?
  • Do you prefer a big city, a small town or a rural setting?

  • How much personal and academic support do you want or need while studying off campus?
  • Are you interested in an independent research project or an internship?

What do I need to have a successful off-campus study semester?

  • How might your academic accommodations work in another country?
  • Are the support services that I want/need available to me in the program's location?
  • If you have a disability, what programs or locations will offer the support services you need?
  • What parts of your identity are most important to you? How might studying off campus impact your identity?

Finances

What are reasonable cost considerations for you and your family?

  • How much does it cost to study off campus?
  • What are the additional costs of studying off campus (i.e. flight, visa, housing deposit, etc.)?
  • What is the cost of living in another city/country?
  • What scholarships or funds are available to help with the cost of off-campus study?
