Nuveen Barwari
October 20 - 26, 2023

Open Reception: Thursday, Oct. 19, 5 - 6:30 p.m.

Nuveen Barwari’s expansive studio practice involves gathering and repurposing artifacts from her community, such as worn Kurdish clothes, fabric, and used rugs to investigate the multiplicity of materials, their inherited history, and cultural meanings.

Through a combination of collage, painting, textiles, and installation, Barwari investigates the intricacies of assimilation, materials culture, and the contradictions of diasporic identities. Barwari is the 2023 fellow in the Skidmore Art Department’s new Workspace Residency Program.

Nuveen Barwari was born in Nashville, TN, and grew up in Duhok, Kurdistan.

She received her MFA from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 2022 and her B.S. in Art from Tennessee State University in 2019.

Barwari has shown at Ortega y Gasset Projects (NY); NGBK Gallery in Berlin, Germany; and Duhok Gallery, in Duhok, Kurdistan, among other venues. Her work has been featured in numerous periodicals, including the Nashville Scene, New American Paintings, and Botan Times.

Gallery hours: Monday - Thursday 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.; Friday, Saturday, Sunday 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.
