Apr 16, 16:20:33Skidmore -> EveryoneHi everyone. Welcome to the live chat! We'll get started in 10 minutes or so. Feel free to submit your questions now!
Apr 16, 16:30:05Skidmore -> EveryoneOkay, let's get started! Meet our panelists.
Apr 16, 16:30:11Beal_Student -> EveryoneHey, I'm Beal! I'm from Ithaca, NY and I'm a senior. (Graduating in exactly one month!) I am a double major in government and English and a minor in French. I work as a Head Admissions Ambassador and as a research assistant to a government professor. I spent a semester abroad in Paris, France last spring. Here on campus, I'm involved with the Environmental Action Club and I work with the Saratoga Springs government on sustainability issues. My favorite foods in the Dining Hall are the chicken-free chik'n nuggets and the cereals at the cereal bar!
Apr 16, 16:30:12Maddie_Student -> EveryoneALOHA! My name is Maddie Kanazawa and I am a junior from Los Angeles, CA and Honolulu, HI!! WOOO WEST COAST and Island! I am a business and music double major. I have been concentrating my studies on the wine and music business. I am part of student government as the VP for Communications & Outreach and also plan different events for the student body! My favorite food in the dining hall is the WHITE BEAN CHICKEN CHILI with tortilla strips, salsa, and cheese. OMG I WANT THIS RIGHT NOW!!! Basketball is my favorite sport. I like it how they dribble up and down the court (name that movie).
Apr 16, 16:30:13David_Student -> EveryoneHello my name is David, I am a senior from Brookline, Massachusetts, I'm a government major and chemistry minor. Here on campus, I am the Managing Editor of the Skidmore News, Skidmore's weekly newspaper, and the Director of Skidmore College EMS, Skidmore's student-run emergency medical service. I'm also currently an intern at the New York State Office of the Medicaid Inspector General, and my favorite food in the dining hall is any breakfast item (especially if it is offered for dinner).
Apr 16, 16:30:16Asher_Student -> EveryoneWhat's up!? My name is Asher Siegel. I'm a sophomore from York, ME/Conway, NH. I just declared a Biochemistry Major, a Business Minor and I'm on a pre-med track as well. Non-academically I play on the Men's Lacrosse Team, I am the student coordinator for SCOOP – Skidmore Outdoor Orientation Programs, which are wicked awesome optional orientation programs that happen before school starts. I'm also a big skier and teach skiing when I'm home on winter break. Additionally, I enjoy long walks on the beach and rom-coms.
Apr 16, 16:30:22Particpant -> Panelist(s)What do students do on an average weekend?
Apr 16, 16:30:23Student_Kevin -> EveryoneGREETINGS EARTHLINGS - it is I, yes, Kev Berry, your friendly-ish fabulous fierce fresh Facebook mod coming at you from Barcelona, Spain, where I've been hanging out for the last week, as a part of my Easter holiday from Goldsmiths College, University of London, where I'm spending the semester. It's 1:30am on this side of the mid-Atlantic ridge, so I'll only be chatting for an hour, though if the demand is high enough for more of this glitter, we'll see what I can do - I'm on vacation, right? Stay up late party haha no I am pure. Anyway - so I'm abroad so you can ask me questions about being abroad, I'm a theater and gender studies double major so you can ask me about theatre gender studies double majoring or what it's like to be a theater gender studies double major, I'm as gay as the day is long so LGBT*Q+ peeps and allies can ask me any questions about all that, I'm the president of AIDSBenefit - Skidmore's performance based advocacy club, and I'm kind of a tour guide, and I work for Communications/FYE fielding all of your questions about whether or not you need to bring bath towels and cold weather gear to Skidmore, so I'm old hat at this. If any of this interests you shoot me a QUESTION and I'll ANSWER it. A fun fact about me is that when I was a child I accidentally cut my sister's bangs with child's scissors and when my dad asked why I did it I apparently yelled "Fashion!" That explains why I am the way I am. Welcome aboard the SS Accepted Students Live Chat, I'm Kev and I'm not your captain. (Author's Note: The WiFi in this apartment is just a little bit woo-woo-ey, so if I disappear, don't fret - I didn't apparate - the WiFi is just giving me 'tude because I didn't want to do it for the Vine.)
Apr 16, 16:30:32Particpant -> Panelist(s)How many hours of homework are given on the typical school day?
Apr 16, 16:30:34Maddie_Student -> EveryoneKEVIN!!!!!!
Apr 16, 16:30:35Student_Kevin -> EveryoneWOW I DO NOT LOOK LIKE MY PICTURE
Apr 16, 16:31:12Student_Kevin -> EveryoneUgh forgot to mention I'm from Long Island #StrongIsland
Apr 16, 16:32:17Particpant -> Panelist(s)Kevin- can you tell us more about the LGBT community at Skidmore?
Apr 16, 16:32:27Participant -> David_StudentIf there was something you could change about Skidmore, what would you change?
David_Student -> ParticpantThe weather--sometimes I miss the sunshine, which only hangs around Skidmore about a third of the school year. BUT if you love snow, and long walks in the snow, the weather here is PERFECT.
Apr 16, 16:32:52Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hey guys! I'm Alli- a junior in high school from Maine. What's your favorite part about the school?
Apr 16, 16:33:17Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hey could you guys talk a little bit about the nightlife in Saratoga Springs?
Apr 16, 16:33:38Participant -> Student_KevinIf there was something you could change about Skidmore, what would you change?
Student_Kevin -> ParticpantFacetious: Less squirrels. Serious: I wish more people, myself included in a big way, cared more politically - not so much about the fad issue of the day - but just in general. I sometimes feel like we're almost apathetic, sometimes. That being said - there is a large group of politically active students who are very involved and aware of what's what. If that makes sense.
Apr 16, 16:34:03Participant -> Beal_StudentIf there was something you could change about Skidmore, what would you change?
Beal_Student -> ParticpantHey Sarah!!! Back in the old days (AKA, when I was a first-year student), I might have said that I wished we had nicer upperclassmen housing. BUT NOW, we have the brand-new Sussmann Village, which is AWESOME. Now, our Northwoods and Sussmann apartments are beautiful, geothermally heated and cooled and they have slate floors, stainless steel appliances, etc. etc. They're a great housing option!
Apr 16, 16:34:56Participant -> Asher_StudentIs there a lot of school spirit at Skidmore? Do sporting events get a lot of support?
Asher_Student -> ParticpantHey JenEvs067, the school spirit at Skidmore is kinda hard to get a read on. For a Division 3 small liberal arts school we have a lot of school spirit and sporting events get a good amount of fans, but it isn't like going to a big DI football powerhouse which is a lot of times a good thing
Apr 16, 16:35:34Participant -> David_StudentHey guys! I'm Alli- a junior in high school from Maine. What's your favorite part about the school?
David_Student -> ParticpantHi Alli! If I had to pick just one aspect, I would go with the professors (I'm a tad nerdy, sue me). I have really close relationships with two of my professors, and they have been amazing in advising me through...well, life, over the last four years (as well, of course, as teaching some really amazing classes).
Apr 16, 16:35:46Participant -> Student_KevinWhat do students do on an average weekend?
Student_Kevin -> ParticpantCry, take a shower, cry. That's usually my normal Saturday morning routing, and then I'll usually go downtown to do some work at my chosen table at Spot or Uncommon, and then depending on the day and on my bank account, I'll meet a friend for dinner in town at one of the restaurants, or just grab a Putnam sandwich and head back to campus for whatever events are going on that night, be it a fun themed costume party, a comedy show, an a cappella jam, a seance, or even just more crying. Hope this helps! XOXO Gossip Kev
Apr 16, 16:36:06Participant -> Student_KevinHey guys! I'm Alli- a junior in high school from Maine. What's your favorite part about the school?
Student_Kevin -> ParticpantI love the people. Plain and simple. I LOVE the people.
Apr 16, 16:36:31Particpant -> Panelist(s)What is a prodominent activity found among freshman?
Apr 16, 16:36:41Participant -> Asher_StudentHi, I was wondering if Skidmore had women's club lacrosse?
Asher_Student -> ParticpantHey Noa. Right now we don't have a women's club lacrosse team. However, all of our sports teams welcome walk-on tryouts. Also, it's totally possible for you to start one as soon as you get on campus! A good friend of mine is starting a men's club team in the fall!
Apr 16, 16:36:53Participant -> Beal_StudentAre there a lot of parties on campus? What is the drinking culture like at Skidmore?
Beal_Student -> Particpanthey Jessica C! Parties -- they exist! Skidmore doesn't have fraternities or sororities, so we don't have the extreme, unhealthy drinking culture that some larger schools have. Alternatively, we have many smaller house parties that occur on weekends. We also have tons of events going on during the weekends, including dances and raves and live concerts, so people will go to those and dance. We also have a cappella concerts and percussion concerts and dance concerts, so if that's more your style, that's fun too! Last weekend we had a giant day of outdoor concerts and also a foam pit! Wahoo!
Apr 16, 16:36:55Participant -> Maddie_StudentHi, I am interested in doing a business major while at the same time would like to develop my creative side. I wanted to know if business courses get filled up easily. Also, Skidmore has a reputation for being very artsy. I am not entirely "artsy" but am a thinker and am creative. What kind of people go to Skidmore? Will I fit in?
Maddie_Student -> ParticpantHi DhruvSingh! Business courses don't necessarily get filled up pretty quickly. It is a decent sized program and the lower level classes have multiple class times so it will be easy to get into them when needed. I honestly disagree with the "artsy" stigma of Skidmore because we have so many people that express their creativity in other fields like Psychology and Government! You will definitely FIT IN HERE!!
Apr 16, 16:37:52Participant -> David_StudentHey could you guys talk a little bit about the nightlife in Saratoga Springs?
David_Student -> ParticpantJacob, the nightlife is Saratoga is rockin'. Saratoga Springs is home to one of the biggest horse racing tracks in the country, and--especially while the track is closed--we get to take advantage of all the restaurants, coffee shops, bars, shops, etc. that are in town.
Apr 16, 16:37:56Particpant -> Panelist(s)Whats it like to live in a suite as a freshman and upper classmen?
Apr 16, 16:38:26Participant -> Beal_StudentHello there, My question is after enroll, can I still apply for FA or scholarship since the tuition is kind of expernsive
Beal_Student -> ParticpantHey Dirtbikemaster! Our deadline for financial aid is May 15, according to this website here: https://www.skidmore.edu/financialaid/deadlines/1415-prospective-enrolled-freshmen-deadlines.php. Check it out!
Apr 16, 16:38:32Participant -> Student_KevinHey could you guys talk a little bit about the nightlife in Saratoga Springs?
Student_Kevin -> ParticpantWell well well - There are really 2 Saratogas I've experienced, pre-21 and post-21. I'll talk about the pre-21 first. Pre: restuarants, coffee, bookstores, shopping, movies, it's such a wonderful town to get to know and love just by walking around on a Saturday or Sunday night. One of my most important memories of college is seeing downtown Saratoga completely abandoned in the rain, in the first week after orientation. Such a great town. And then, like David said, once you're of age, it gets even better ;)
Apr 16, 16:38:55Participant -> Asher_StudentHow do current students feel about dorm rooms? Are there any dorms to avoid?
Asher_Student -> ParticpantHey JessicaC, the dorm rooms are awesome! They are actually huge, and I'm sure everyones seen some pretty small dorm rooms in their travels. All the dorms are pretty nice and there really aren't any to avoid! On top of that you won't be able to select where exactly you live freshman year, unless you're interested in living in a Chem-Free housing or an all-womens floor
Apr 16, 16:40:26Particpant -> Panelist(s)Do the dorms have their own bathrooms?
Apr 16, 16:40:30Particpant -> Panelist(s)How accessible and helpful do you find the tutoring at Skidmore?
Apr 16, 16:40:39Participant -> Asher_StudentHow noticeable is the disparity between girls and guys?
Asher_Student -> ParticpantHey JessicaC again! the disparity between girls and guys really isn't that noticeable on campus. Although the stats say we are 60:40 I have never once been like "oh wow I'm the only guy in this class/social situation"
Apr 16, 16:41:32Participant -> Beal_StudentHow many hours of homework are given on the typical school day?
Beal_Student -> ParticpantHey JessicaC -- HOMEWORK HAPPENS. I'd say that it depends on what type of homework you're doing (ex. a musician may have hours of practicing to do, and a person in an English class may need to write essays and do readings). On average, I spend maybe 4 hours a night in the library, but I also like to do my reading elsewhere. Sometimes it will be less, and sometimes it will be more! It does depend on the person and their study habits, though!
Apr 16, 16:42:21Participant -> David_StudentDo you find that the colleges tutoring system is helpful and accessible?
David_Student -> ParticpantHey Cat! The tutoring system is great here, and you should totally check out the Student Academic Services website (they run the tutoring programs here (https://www.skidmore.edu/academic_services/). I'm a tutor for the government department, and needed a whole bunch of tutoring during organic chemistry. One of the best parts about the tutoring system here is that it is completely free. All you have to do is fill out an online form, and student academic services will match you with an upperclassman tutor whole already took the class you need help with. Is there anything specifically you want to know about?
Apr 16, 16:42:52Particpant -> Panelist(s)Asher I'm from York too haha
Apr 16, 16:43:01Particpant -> Panelist(s)How are the vegetarian options in the dining hall?
Apr 16, 16:43:25Particpant -> Panelist(s)How noticeable is the newest and greatest tech on campus? What is big among students? Laptops? iPad? Printing?
Apr 16, 16:43:50Particpant -> Panelist(s)Nothing particularity, I'm stuck between schools and I'm just trying to find something that stands out between them.
Apr 16, 16:43:50Participant -> Asher_StudentAsher I'm from York too haha
Asher_Student -> ParticpantAlli! No way! You kinda have to come to Skidmore now so we can be best friends.
Apr 16, 16:43:55Participant -> Maddie_StudentWhat's the music scene like on campus and in Saratoga Springs?
Maddie_Student -> ParticpantJacob Serfaty! That's a great question! The music scene here is super eclectic! We have a bunch of different bands that range from funk, rock, "alternative", electric pop, etc. We also have a decent amount of DJs on campus including a club called DJ ANonymous which will teach people how to be DJS YAYY. Also the town itself has a lot of different venues for bands/DJs to play and also bands that look for skidmore bands to open them! I love the amount of live music here! If you are interested! Kurt Rosenwinkel (an amazing Jazz Guitarist) is performing in our concert hall tonight. Here is the link to the livestream! Click Here He did a masterclass last night with our jazz combos and he is a musical genius!
Apr 16, 16:44:13Participant -> Beal_StudentWhat are possible jobs for students who received a work study in their financial aid grant? Are there any favorites among students?
Beal_Student -> ParticpantHey JessicaC! All first-year students who receive work study grants work in Dining Services -- either in our dining hall doing food prep or in our A -la-carte dining eatery, the Spa, or in Burgess/Atrium/Library Cafe. After that, you are able to get a job doing whatever you'd like on campus -- I worked in the dining hall, which was fun, but I also work now as a research assistant and I'm a tour guide. So there's lots of options.

Tour guiding is a popular job! Other popular ones include dining services/catering and departmental assistantship positions. Hope this helps!
Apr 16, 16:44:30Particpant -> Panelist(s)I know that Skimdore is a very art oriented school, which is great but i would be part of the minority who are not very creative . Is it possible to go through Skidmore without taking any art classes?
Apr 16, 16:44:58Particpant -> Panelist(s)This one's for Maddie: how intensive is the music program at Skidmore? Is it easy to balance music with another major?
Apr 16, 16:45:15Participant -> Student_KevinWhat is a prodominent activity found among freshman?
Student_Kevin -> ParticpantCrying, crying in the library, crying in the d-hall, crying in your dorm.

JUST KIDDING. My favorite activity, and I think this is pretty accurate of my whole class when we were first years, is sitting on the green in the sun, sitting on the south lawn in the sun, when it's warm. Taking advantage of the warmth while you have it. It's moments like those, little moments of accidental transcendence where you feel like you're out of body and looking down on yourself realizing that these'll be the four best years of your life, that I love. When else are you going to have the opportunity to just sit and chat on the grass with your friends? Never.

Ugh okay this got a little off track but the answer is, apart from studying and doing homework and eating and sleeping and being in class: number 1 leisure activity is chilling on the green and then when it gets cold chilling in the dorms.

I guess.
Apr 16, 16:45:24Particpant -> Panelist(s)What did you guys do to afford the pricey tuition?
Apr 16, 16:45:46Particpant -> Panelist(s)So on my tours, none of the guides mentioned anything about laundry -- but everyone seemed clean and well-pressed. Where are the washers and dryers, and are they pay-to-use?
Apr 16, 16:45:49Particpant -> Panelist(s)Asher- I definitely want to come! We'll be best friends for sure if I decide to :)
Apr 16, 16:46:18Particpant -> Panelist(s)What sort of clubs and activities are offered?
Apr 16, 16:46:32Participant -> Maddie_StudentMany people says the Skidmore is a College with extremely good at Art but weak at the other part, what would you say about this kind of comments?
Maddie_Student -> ParticpantView my VideoAnswer: Click Here
Apr 16, 16:46:32Particpant -> Panelist(s)What percentage of students on campus would you say smoke cigarettes?
Apr 16, 16:47:01Participant -> Beal_StudentHey guys! I'm Alli- a junior in high school from Maine. What's your favorite part about the school?
Beal_Student -> ParticpantAlli! Let me tell you my favorite thing -- the campus is amazingly beautiful. I've spent two summers here on campus, and I absolutely LOVE the community I've become a part of. I have gotten to know many faculty and staff members, and I'm friends with students from all class years. I love the culture of friendliness and inclusivity here.
Apr 16, 16:47:49Particpant -> Panelist(s)What are some of the sustainable and eco-friendly things that Skidmore does?
Apr 16, 16:48:14Participant -> David_StudentSo on my tours, none of the guides mentioned anything about laundry -- but everyone seemed clean and well-pressed. Where are the washers and dryers, and are they pay-to-use?
David_Student -> ParticpantDevon_C! Yes, thank heavens, everyone is clean here...WHICH IS DEFINITELY A GOOD THING AND I HOPE IT STAYS THAT WAY. Every dorm has washing machines, and you can pay for them using our card swipe system using money from your student account.
Apr 16, 16:48:38Participant -> Beal_StudentDo the dorms have their own bathrooms?
Beal_Student -> ParticpantHey Alli, most of the dorms are suite-style, which means that, except for one building, there are three or four rooms that share a common bathroom with two sinks, a toilet, and a shower. It worked out for me when I shared a bathroom! You can always work out a shower schedule if you need to! The bathrooms are also kept tidy and clean thanks to Housekeeping!
Apr 16, 16:48:50Particpant -> Panelist(s)What is the IR program like? When I visited the school it seemed as if it was a weak program. BTW how much does it cost to do laundry?
Apr 16, 16:49:38Particpant -> Panelist(s)RA's overbaring or out of your way unless needed
Apr 16, 16:49:54Particpant -> Panelist(s)Are there vacuums and other resources available to keep your dorm room clean?
Apr 16, 16:50:06Participant -> Maddie_StudentI'm very interested in both Biology and Music. I'm not exactly sure what I want to study yet, but I was wondering if there are people who are Biology majors (or are other majors) who have taken advantage of a lot of performance opportunities? I'm a singer so I perform a lot but I'm just worried that if I major in a science or something other than music that I will be limited to things such as vocal performances. Thank you!
Maddie_Student -> Particpanthey Laura! There are definitely people who do both! in fact the music department for majors is relatively small and the majority of the students are minors and/or just students who want to take the classes. There are so many opportunities in both departments!
Apr 16, 16:50:09Particpant -> Panelist(s)Could you talk about Substance-Free living? How many people choose it and do they usually like it? Does it ever feel separate from those living in traditional housing?
Apr 16, 16:50:10Particpant -> Panelist(s)Do any of you see student-athletes who have to travel for their sport struggling more than usual?
Apr 16, 16:50:29Participant -> David_StudentWhat percentage of students on campus would you say smoke cigarettes?
David_Student -> ParticpantLulu--Skidmore is currently in the midst of reworking our smoking policy for the campus, but about 25% of our students smoke cigarettes. What exactly are you concerned about?
Apr 16, 16:50:56Particpant -> Panelist(s)How frequent is it to get summer internships/research opportunities for biology/chemistry majors?
Apr 16, 16:51:27Particpant -> Panelist(s)Honest thoughts on dining hall?
Apr 16, 16:51:29Participant -> Asher_StudentWhat sort of clubs and activities are offered?
Asher_Student -> ParticpantHey Alli: there are over 120 clubs here on campus! Literally anything you could want you can find and if we don't have it you can make it! Our most popular clubs are the Outing Club -- hiking, canoeing, camping, being outside -- and Benefaction -- our volunteering group! There are over 3500 events each academic year so you will definitely find things to do!
Apr 16, 16:51:32Particpant -> Panelist(s)How did you perception of Skidmore change after you enrolled as a student? Were there any stereotypes or assumptions you made that were disproved or affirmed?
Apr 16, 16:51:42Particpant -> Panelist(s)@Beal_Student is your workload really 4 hours a night? How do you have time for work and/or clubs and a social life?
Apr 16, 16:52:32Participant -> David_StudentKevin- can you tell us more about the LGBT community at Skidmore?
David_Student -> ParticpantChelsea! The LGBT community at Skidmore is quite active--we have a pride alliance group on campus, and they are constantly holding events. Kevin, do you have anything else to add?
Apr 16, 16:52:42Participant -> Beal_StudentWhat did you guys do to afford the pricey tuition?
Beal_Student -> ParticpantHi Amelia! Yes, tuition is a lot. However, I am a heavily aided student, and my financial aid offering from Skidmore was one of the reasons why I chose to come here. Skidmore is a need-aware school, which means that we consider the needs of every student when we look at their application. We guarantee to meet the difference between your expected family contribution and the cost of school.

My aid increased every year while I was here. I got to attend a scholarship dinner this year with many donors and express my gratitude. We also have lots of jobs on campus! If you have more specific questions, let me know. I'm happy to help.
Apr 16, 16:54:02Participant -> Asher_StudentDo any of you see student-athletes who have to travel for their sport struggling more than usual?
Asher_Student -> ParticpantHey Cat, I'm a student-athlete on the men's lacrosse team here. At least once a week in the spring I'm traveling at least a few hours for games. That being said, the school and professors are super super helpful when it comes to managing course load. All teams on campus also have a personal liaison in the Student Academic Services office who keeps tabs on how everyone is doing in class and makes sure to help them get tutors or extra help if necessary. If anything, being on a sports team helps you become more organized with your work!
Apr 16, 16:54:29Participant -> Beal_StudentHow are the vegetarian options in the dining hall?
Beal_Student -> ParticpantWe have a station-by-station dining service in the dining hall, and Emily's Garden is an entirely vegan and vegetarian station. It has a legume bar with yummy salads as well as a green salad bar and entrees. How exciting! We label all of our food, as well, as gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan, so you can be sure of what you're eating. I don't eat a ton of meat, and I love the dining hall! We always have a vegetarian option alongside the meat option (i.e., veggie and chicken enchiladas, tofu and chicken noodle bowls). We also have a test kitchen, an uncontaminated space, that folks can use to cook in if they have dietary restrictions!
Apr 16, 16:54:30Participant -> Student_KevinHonest thoughts on dining hall?
Student_Kevin -> ParticpantView my VideoAnswer: Click Here
Apr 16, 16:55:16Participant -> David_StudentCould you talk about Substance-Free living? How many people choose it and do they usually like it? Does it ever feel separate from those living in traditional housing?
David_Student -> ParticpantHi Annie! WHATS UP GURL? All of our dorms here at Skidmore are substance free. However, we have a floor in one of our dorms that is specifically for students who request substance free housing (informally, we call it substance free plus!). I had close friends who lived on the substance free floor, and it was absolutely integrated with the rest of campus life.
Apr 16, 16:55:30Beal_Student -> EveryoneMISS YOU KEV!!!
Apr 16, 16:56:00Particpant -> Panelist(s)Kevin real talk for a sec, have you played doge 2048?
Apr 16, 16:56:06Participant -> Maddie_StudentThis one's for Maddie: how intensive is the music program at Skidmore? Is it easy to balance music with another major?
Maddie_Student -> ParticpantOh Amelia! I am so happy you asked me this question! The program is broken down in parts: theory, musicology, performance, electives. The electives could be an extension of musicology, performance, or composition and music technology. It is definitely easy to balance this major. I am doing both business and music which have some of the most credits and its honestly time management. Planning is key if you want to do double majors. But it is definitely doable!
Apr 16, 16:56:49Student_Kevin -> EveryoneWait yes Skidmore is a very safe place for those of us lucky enough to have the LGBTQ+. In fact, this coming weekend, and I'm furious I'm missing it, is the DIVA dance, the Pride Alliance (who are very active on campus) dance that happens every semester! Anyhoo - Skidmore's a place where you can be who you wanna be and kiss who you wanna kiss and all that - It's a good place, a truly safe place. Cheers.
Apr 16, 16:57:12Particpant -> Panelist(s)What do you all think of the size of Skidmore? Do you know everyone on campus or are there frequently new faces?
Apr 16, 16:57:26Participant -> Student_KevinKevin real talk for a sec, have you played doge 2048?
Student_Kevin -> ParticpantObviously. Not the time or place for this though! Kisses!
Apr 16, 16:57:38Maddie_Student -> Everyonekevin! how's break?
Apr 16, 16:57:44Asher_Student -> EveryoneSeriously though you should all come to Skidmore it's amazing.
Apr 16, 16:57:48Participant -> David_StudentHow noticeable is the newest and greatest tech on campus? What is big among students? Laptops? iPad? Printing?
David_Student -> ParticpantSTEVEN. Honest talk here. Skidmore isn't stuck in the dark ages, but we haven't quite hit the future either. There are tons of iPhones around campus, and most students have Apple laptops (there is even a real live Apple store on campus), but you don't see students with magic watches either. I actually had someone who lived on my floor freshman year who had a typewriter...I don't actually know what to say about that, but it is true and it was weird.
Apr 16, 16:58:15Participant -> Asher_StudentHow did you perception of Skidmore change after you enrolled as a student? Were there any stereotypes or assumptions you made that were disproved or affirmed?
Asher_Student -> ParticpantHey JessicaC! I actually didn't know too much about the stereotypes of Skidmore students until I actually came here. A lot of my friends would say oh, its so artsy there at skidmore, or there are a lot of "hipsters" (whatever that is). The absolute best thing about Skidmore is the diversity of the student population as far as personalities and interests go. Any type of person you wanna find, you can find here

Apr 16, 16:59:53Participant -> Asher_StudentWhat do you all think of the size of Skidmore? Do you know everyone on campus or are there frequently new faces?
Asher_Student -> ParticpantI think the size of Skidmore is perfect. That being said, I came from a graduating class of 65 students. However, I'm pretty involved both on campus and off and I am still meeting new people every week, and I get to see at least one person I know on the walk to class every day.
Apr 16, 16:59:57Participant -> Beal_StudentWhat are some of the sustainable and eco-friendly things that Skidmore does?
Beal_Student -> ParticpantYo, Amelia! We have AMAZING sustainable initiatives going on. Our Environmental Action Club, Real Food Challenge, and Cool Cities groups have wonderful initiatives going on. Today, on the green, there was a Real Food Challenge event with free samples of sustainable chopsticks, conditioners, etc. etc.

About 45% of our campus is geothermally heated and cooled, including the Arts Quad, the Tang Museum, the dining hall, our student apartments, and more! We have a brand new bike share program with durable, nearly unbreakable bikes. We are breaking ground on a NEW student garden (replacing our old student garden) that will provide some of the local food to our dining hall. We supply much more local food from other farms. We have a mug-sharing program, water-bottle filling stations, and more. I know I'm missing stuff.

OH! Students living in the apartments can also sign up for a community-supported agriculture share where you get fresh veggies every Friday to cook for the week!
Apr 16, 17:00:26Particpant -> Panelist(s)How active is the outing club and what kind of trips do they go on? If I don't have all the equipment needed is there a way to rent from the school?
Apr 16, 17:00:36Participant -> Maddie_StudentWhat sort of clubs and activities are offered?
Maddie_Student -> ParticpantAlli!!! literally 122 clubs on campus. Ranges from academic, athletics, arts, community service, dance, games, outdoorsy and just common interests between friends. Super easy to get involved and find something that you have never heard of!

I think I chose the perfect size school, for me at least.

Apr 16, 17:01:22Participant -> David_StudentWhat do you all think of the size of Skidmore? Do you know everyone on campus or are there frequently new faces?
David_Student -> ParticpantSkidmore is, all at the same time, absolutely huge and teeny tiny. There is some sort of strange thing happening here where if you are trying to avoid someone you see them EVERYWHERE...in the dining hall, in class, in the bathroom...but at the same time you get to meet new folks in different classes and around campus. Some of my closest friends this year have been in my year all four years, but I didn't meet them until this year.

Apr 16, 17:02:06Participant -> Beal_StudentWhat is the IR program like? When I visited the school it seemed as if it was a weak program. BTW how much does it cost to do laundry?
Beal_Student -> ParticpantHey Jacob7. I don't know a ton about IR, but I am a government major. The program is four-pronged, so they ask that you take classes in four areas: cultural world, political world, economic world, and physical world. So, it's very interdisciplinary. Laundry is $1.25 per load in the washer and dryer. It's card-operated, so you can add money to your card and do laundry. Way fun!

Apr 16, 17:05:18Participant -> Beal_Student @Beal_Student is your workload really 4 hours a night? How do you have time for work and/or clubs and a social life?
Beal_Student -> ParticpantHey Jacob7 -- let me tell you what I did today -- I was working on the Intro to Skidmore program all morning, then I went to class from 12:20 - 1:40. Then, I took a break, then I went to the library from 2 - 5 and finished up a paper and did some research. Between 5-6 I hung out with my friends. Then I had a group meeting, and now I'm here!!! After this, I'll go see my friends some more!

SO, some days are busier than others. But I do still have time to go to lectures and see my friends and cook dinner and all those human things. College definitely teaches you how to time-manage! Last night, there was a lecture by Noah Coburn, an Anthropology professor, about elections in Afghanistan, that I went to. I still have plenty of time to do it!

Our equestrian team is super good but that doesn't mean freshmen cannot make the team because they can and do! There's a good amount of travel but it is totally doable and totally worth it, being on a team here is amazing
Apr 16, 17:07:06Participant -> Beal_StudentHow active is the outing club and what kind of trips do they go on? If I don't have all the equipment needed is there a way to rent from the school?
Beal_Student -> ParticpantHey Annie! Outing Club is HUGE and very popular--that means they have the budget to support tons of trips. They have most supplies that you could need. They lead at least three trips every weekend! We also have climbing nights every Wednesday that are subsidized by the school, which means it only costs us like $30/semester to climb on Wednesdays! We also have spring break trips. Hope that helps!

Apr 16, 17:08:54Participant -> Beal_StudentI read a report online that said in 2011 there most Freshman and Sophomores lived in triples, has that continued or has it gone back to doubles in the recent years?
Beal_Student -> ParticpantHey Cat, so my class year was about 100 students over-enrolled, so we were mostly in triples. Triples still exist, but there are also doubles. Personally, I liked living in a triple, because it forced me to make new friends! I constantly had two other people's groups of friends to hang out with!

There are choices anywhere from soccer to basketball to tennis to volleyball to anything you could possibly want. Super fun and super easy to join

Student_Kevin -> ParticpantHey Kath - yes, of course they're qualified. But I think what sets them apart form profs at other institutions is that they're willing to really develop a relationship with you to know you as you grow as a person and as an artist. I was texting one of my theatre profs this afternoon from Sagrada Familia because she wanted to see pics. I've FaceTimed with my advisor while she was on vacation. The same professor - she got me the connection that led to my first internship! Also yes - there are plenty of opportunities for student produced theatre, whether through clubs or on your own. Cheers.

Apr 16, 17:13:42Participant -> Beal_StudentWhat do you all think of the size of Skidmore? Do you know everyone on campus or are there frequently new faces?
Beal_Student -> ParticpantWell, JessicaC, I came from a very small middle and high school (260 students for middle and high school), so Skidmore felt huge to me. It is really a small to mid-range liberal arts college, and I see people I know all the time, and other times I walk around and don't recognize many people at all! WILD! SO, even as a senior, I'm always meeting new people.
Apr 16, 17:13:57Asher_Student -> EveryoneJenEvs07: so there are actually two ski clubs on campus. One is a ski and snowboard club that plans trips to local mountains like West, Gore, Stratton and many more. There are tons of mountains close by I'd estimate maybe 4/5 within an hour and a half. The other ski club is the Alpine Club Team, which is a club race team that competes against other schools! No experience necessary and super fun.

Maddie_Student -> ParticpantApril2014: When you apply to Skidmore you apply to the whole school. You don't have to declare your major until the second semester of your sophomore year. You get to decide if you want to be a business major. There is a program and that is exactly how it works! you got it!
Apr 16, 17:18:15Participant -> Beal_StudentWhat are the Senior Capstones like? What sort of things do you do? If you're a double major, or want to combine aspects from two different majors, how would you go about doing that?
Beal_Student -> ParticpantHey Alec! Funny you should ask! I'm completing one right now in the English department. The thing about capstones is that they're different from major to major. So, some majors (like English) require them. In English, you can do a seminar class (say, about James Joyce or Samuel Jonson) or a writing-focused capstone (if you're interested in fiction, poetry, or nonfiction writing). But in the business department, the capstone is a class called "Strategy."

So, check the websites of the majors you're interested and see what they've got going on! As far as combining goes, you may need to do something like an independent thesis in order to combine the two. You would work with your advisors (who are wonderful mentors!) to figure that out.

That being said I have never once felt pressured to partake in anything that I didn't want to, drugs or otherwise

A few weeks ago, I summited Spruce Mountain and found a fire tower. Yahoo! But I do like that I can get into NYC, Montreal, Boston relatively easily using public transportation.

I've integrated physics stuff into my playwriting which is something I never would have done if not for the CTM lifestyle of Skidmore. For most majors there is an intro level class, but beyond that you get to pick any course, provided you meet the requirements. And yes, there's a lot of reading and in some cases a lot of rehearsal, writing, artistry, lab time required outside of class. Hope that helps.

As I look back on my time at Skidmore, it's amazing to think of how much is right at our fingertips -- you've gotta take advantage of it all!
Apr 16, 17:32:49Particpant -> Panelist(s)I heard that restaurants in Saratoga Springs are very good. Do students go out to eat often? Is the food in Saratoga Springs affordable for college students?
Apr 16, 17:33:11Particpant -> Panelist(s)how about summer holiday in Skidmore? travel,internship or something?
Apr 16, 17:33:11Participant -> Student_KevinWhat are internships like? How are you able to make connections and network?
Student_Kevin -> ParticpantMy first internship, I got through a connection made through one of my theatre profs - she hooked me up to work a benefit concert reading of a new musical, and I ended up being loved by the people I was working with and they hired me for the next two summers. I've used them to network, and even reaching out on my own to tell artists I think are brilliant that I think so - they're very open to that, and once you get them talking, you can ask them for advice and the like. That's how it's worked for me as a burgeoning director.

Apr 16, 17:33:48Particpant -> Panelist(s)That's cool! Still on freshman classes, especially for English, I heard that it's nearly impossible for freshman to get into creative writing classes. And, more generally, what's the creative writing like at Skidmore, in general? I sorta got the impression there wasn't as much room for narrative writing than for technical writing skills.

Apr 16, 17:35:40Student_Kevin -> EveryoneBY ALL OF MY MONEY I MEAN I WENT OUT LIKE EVERY NIGHT
Apr 16, 17:35:43Participant -> David_StudentHow would you say cooking opportunities are for an incoming freshman and throughout the other years? I was quite excited to see that I would be cooking all my own meals while in London, but when I did not hear much about any facilities available to students.
David_Student -> ParticpantCHARLES. IF YOU CAN COOK YOU ARE GOING TO BE COOKING FOR EVERYONE BECAUSE EVERYONE LOVES A COOK. The Skidmore dining hall has a test kitchen where any student can sign up and reserve the space and then COOK COOK COOK. It is a fully stocked kitchen with pots and pans and...other things that I guess people would need to cook (I'm all about ordering pizza), and they provide you with spices, flour etc. for free.
Apr 16, 17:36:13Particpant -> Panelist(s)As a student who seems to always be in the middle of her class, I'm curious how competitive the academics are and how supportive you find other students in your class.
Apr 16, 17:36:36Participant -> Beal_StudentI heard that restaurants in Saratoga Springs are very good. Do students go out to eat often? Is the food in Saratoga Springs affordable for college students?
Beal_Student -> ParticpantTabitha! We have so much yummy food -- my favorite is The Local -- it's super affordable and REALLY yummy. We also have Chowderfest (Broadway closes, people walk in the street and eat chowder from the restaurants in town). YAHOO. We also have restaurant week once a semester, where you get a three course meal at participating restaurants for cheap!

Maddie_Student -> ParticpantDevon: The process- find which departments you want to use to create your major. Create a proposal with your advisors from each department. if approved, IT CAN BE CREATED!

Apr 16, 17:37:36Participant -> Beal_Studenthow about summer holiday in Skidmore? travel,internship or something?
Beal_Student -> ParticpantI loved spending the summer in Skidmore - I've done it twice. I worked part-time as a tour guide and in an office, so I got administrative experience. I also went swimming almost every day and to Dairy Haus, which is a great ice cream place. Saratoga in the summertime is so vibrant and wonderful! The population triples during the summertime, due to the racetrack, which is a fun $3 trip!

Apr 16, 17:40:36Participant -> Asher_StudentDid any of you participate in the first year experience in London? And if so, what was it like?
Asher_Student -> ParticpantHey Alex, so none of the four of us took advantage of the FYE London program however I know tons about it! It's a really cool experience if you are of great adventurous spirit. About 40 students will travel to London for the fall semester with two faculty advisors. you'll take classes in London that will transfer back to skidmore and keep you on track! you'll have the opportunity to see some of Europe as well which is awesome and it won't stop you going from abroad later on either
Apr 16, 17:41:23Particpant -> Panelist(s)Thanks Kevin! One more theatre question: It seems like the theatre program discourages double majoring (at least from the professor I talked to about it). I'm interested in double majoring, possibly in psych, sociology, or gender studies. Would that be really difficult/do many students do that?
Apr 16, 17:41:53Participant -> David_StudentAs a student who seems to always be in the middle of her class, I'm curious how competitive the academics are and how supportive you find other students in your class.
David_Student -> ParticpantHey Cat. That's a great question. We don't grade on a curve here, so there is no incentive for students to be mean to each other. That means that students really do work together and support one another. On the other hand, this is a great school with a strong academic program which means that there is work and you do need to do it and sometimes it is hard. But, the work is almost always satisfying and in a topic that you are interested in, and spending 8 hours in the library working on something that you are generally interested in barely feels like work at all.
Apr 16, 17:42:21Particpant -> Panelist(s)I have heard a lot of great things about the dance program at Skidmore from external sources, but what do the students think about it? What are the performances like and how is the female to male ratio?
Apr 16, 17:42:43Particpant -> Panelist(s)How would you guys describe the student body?
Apr 16, 17:42:49Particpant -> Panelist(s)what about the expenses for abroad program, how much should I expect to pay for it ?
Apr 16, 17:43:10Participant -> David_StudentAre there cliques at Skidmore?
David_Student -> ParticpantJessica. I don't know anything about that. I've seen mean girls, but only on TV and never here.
Apr 16, 17:43:13Participant -> Maddie_Studentwhat are the internatioanal students life like there?
Maddie_Student -> ParticpantApril, where are you from? International students get onto campus a little earlier than the rest of the student body! They can choose to have a "host family" that is from the Saratoga community! They also get free storage spaces during the summer months. But they pretty much fully integrate into the Skidmore community
Apr 16, 17:43:23Participant -> Student_KevinThanks Kevin! One more theatre question: It seems like the theatre program discourages double majoring (at least from the professor I talked to about it). I'm interested in double majoring, possibly in psych, sociology, or gender studies. Would that be really difficult/do many students do that?
Student_Kevin -> ParticpantOkay Iz. Disregard that professor's opinion on double-majoring. If you want to do it, and can make it work, make it work and do the work. I'm a Gender Studies double major and am LOVING the crossover between the programs. You can defs do it with the three you're considering. Doing it with Bio, for example, would be much more difficult. Yes, I think most of the theatre department are double majors or at least theater major double minors.
Apr 16, 17:44:07Participant -> Student_Kevinwhat about the expenses for abroad program, how much should I expect to pay for it ?
Student_Kevin -> ParticpantIf you're doing a Skidmore program (and I believe any of the approved programs,) you pay exactly the same as you would for a semester at Skidz. And financial aid and the good stuff transfers!
Apr 16, 17:44:44Participant -> Beal_StudentThat's cool! Still on freshman classes, especially for English, I heard that it's nearly impossible for freshman to get into creative writing classes. And, more generally, what's the creative writing like at Skidmore, in general? I sorta got the impression there wasn't as much room for narrative writing than for technical writing skills.
Beal_Student -> ParticpantAlec, alright so here's what I'd recommend: your freshman fall, you'd take Intro to Literary Studies. Second semester, try to get into one of the 200-level intro to Fiction, Poetry, or Nonfiction classes. They are all different, depending on who teaches them. Contrary to what your impression has been, I've found that there's a ton of support for the creative writing program here. We run a student literary magazine as well as a professional literary magazine (Salmagundi) out of our English Department, and we also have the Summer Writer's Institute (http://www.skidmore.edu/summerwriters/).

I'm on the nonfiction track and I've been taking workshops for years. I didn't have trouble getting into them - I've been writing since I joined EN-219 (Nonfiction) my sophomore year. Oh my gosh, I can't speak highly enough of the English Dept. I'm sorry we didn't get a chance to chat in person while you were here!

Apr 16, 17:46:12Participant -> Beal_StudentHow would you guys describe the student body?
Beal_Student -> ParticpantKat, the only generalization I can make about Skidmore students is that they're WAY PASSIONATE about whatever they're passionate about. It could be anything at all, or any combination of things, and that's the best part! Looks like Kev's got this question figured out!
Apr 16, 17:46:58Participant -> Student_KevinWhat is the LGBTQ community like on campus, and how accepting is the campus as a whole?
Student_Kevin -> ParticpantWhat's it like: broad and active and happy and wonderful and sensitive and space.

On a whole: extremely accepting.

Can't even make jokes about it. It's a mostly perfect safe space.
Apr 16, 17:47:48Particpant -> Panelist(s)What is the Scribner mentor program like? And what classes did you guys choose to take for it?
Apr 16, 17:48:16Particpant -> Panelist(s)Beal, that's awesome, thank you! I think I just didn't run into any freshman taking an English major. I really loved the workshop setting I saw though, it looked like it was the perfect mix of professor and classmate input and advice.

Beal_Student -> ParticpantHey Alec, yeah, that seems like the right impression. I've been so amazed by my professors' ability to TEACH and allow for discussion at the same time. Despite the fact that there's a lot of majors, there's anywhere from 30 - 50 professors on the ground teaching at any one time, which keeps classes small! And I didn't figure out that I wanted to be an English major until sophomore year, and even then, I had plenty of time to take classes and explore the department.
Apr 16, 17:51:07Participant -> Maddie_StudentI have heard a lot of great things about the dance program at Skidmore from external sources, but what do the students think about it? What are the performances like and how is the female to male ratio?
Maddie_Student -> ParticpantCharles dickens: The performances are well attended and are amazing with the amount of creative talent from the dancers. I'd say us non dancers are blown away from they're talent. For a liberal arts school, its common to have a more female dominant dance department but that doesn't stop us from doing performances like Swan Lake, Firebird, Faun, etc.
Apr 16, 17:51:11Student_Kevin -> EveryoneCan't believe I just sent that.
Apr 16, 17:51:46Particpant -> Panelist(s)Do you know how hard it is to get into the equestrian team?
Apr 16, 17:51:52Participant -> David_StudentWhat is the Scribner mentor program like? And what classes did you guys choose to take for it?
David_Student -> ParticpantHey Kath. I was a Peer Mentor, and it was a great experience. The peer mentors are upperclassmen that take the Scribner seminar with first year students, and help to teach the co-circular portion of the class (i.e. chats about drugs and alcohol, safe sex, etc). The Scribner seminar I took as a first year student was about constitutional law, and it was the hardest class I have taken at Skidmore and by far my favorite. The seminar I was a peer mentor for was about creative writing, and that was even better.
Apr 16, 17:52:07Participant -> Student_KevinHow does the study abroad programs work - is it during a semester? How do you take classes etc?
Student_Kevin -> ParticpantYes. During a semester, or two if you choose to go abroad for a year.

And yes, you take classes. Obvs. It's like doing a semester at Skidmore, in a slightly different educational system, in another country!
Apr 16, 17:52:51Participant -> Asher_StudentI am considering going into Neuroscience,are there a lot of opportunities for research?
Asher_Student -> Particpante-dog (a nickname i just made up for you)- our neuroscience department is da bomb. Let me tell you a little story about my experiences. I took NS101, Intro to Neuro and it was awesome. A tough, but super rewarding class. Additionally, my scribner seminar was neurosciency and taught by Flip Phillips who is an amazing professor (used to work at pixar). There is amazing research going on as well. Prof. Bonner is doing work with zebrafish looking at the development of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome as well as many more awesome opportunities

Student_Kevin -> ParticpantHi Charles! Trans* acceptance is equally accepted - that is with open arms and loving hearts. There are several gender neutral options available in the dorms, and in the upperclass housing it's all fair game you live with who you want to live with. There are gender neutral bathrooms in most, if not all of the buildings on campus. XO hope this helps XO
Apr 16, 17:55:13Participant -> Beal_StudentIs there an advisor for getting into veterinary school? What percent of students get accepted from Skidmore?
Beal_Student -> ParticpantHey Melissa, We have something called HPAC, Health Professions Advisory Committee. You'll get a separate Health Professions advisor who will help you apply, interview, and take classes to prepare you for vet school. The average vet school acceptance rate is 80% for students here, which is amazingly high!
