Course Description

The Ethics of design

Instructor(s): Katherine Hauser, Art History

Can designed objects or systems kill? Certainly. Intentionally destructive objects and systems like bombs, guns, and slaughter houses are designed to kill humans and animals. Design can also kill unintentionally, as is the case with crash test dummies. Their design, based on male bodies, means far more women are injured and die in car accidents than men. In this course you will learn how design choices can destroy bodies, psyches, and the environment. Yet, design can also enhance the lives of humans and animals, and potentially heal the planet. The course will explore dangerous and beneficial design in themes that include death, gambling, social media, and consumer culture. You will be successful in this course if you maintain a significant and consistent commitment to the course material and demonstrate effective visual analysis, writing, and speaking skills.
