The French Program

France Colmar

The French section at Skidmore offers a number of opportunities for students inside and outside of the classroom. The curriculum in French includes a broad selection of courses in the language, cultures, and literatures of the French-speaking world. Our elementary and intermediate courses steadily build your language skills and confidence while introducing the variety of francophone cultures, while our upper-level electives develop proficiency through advanced language study and themed courses, taught in French, on francophone cultures, litteratures, or current events. Take your French beyond the classroom by stopping by the bi-weekly Pause-café conversation and coffee hour, flipping crêpes at the bi-annual Soirée crêpes in the Dining Hall Test Kitchen, or joining your camarades de classe for French Club events throughout the semester.

You may also use your French to connect to other academic disciplines through the Language Across the Curriculum (LAC) courses. The LAC courses allow students to read and discuss discipline-specific materials in French.

Excellence in the study of French can lead to a nomination to the Nu Iota chapter of Pi Delta Phi, the National French Honor Society.

For students interested in studying abroad in in a French-speaking country, we encourage you to view the Off-Campus Studies & Exchanges information concerning study abroad opportunities.
