IM Racquetball Rules

STARTING THE GAME: The match consists of the best two-of-three games. The first two games are played to 15 points. If a third game is necessary, it is played only to 11 points. The player winning a coin toss chooses to serve or receive to begin the first game. To begin the third game, the player who scored the most points during the first two games gets the choice to serve or receive. If the point totals are equal another coin toss is required. A ten (10) minute grace period will be given before a forfeit will be called. After two forfeits, players will be disqualified from further league play.
THE EQUIPMENT: Balls will be provided by the Intramural Department. Racquets can be signed out for the Intramural season with an ID. Please see the intramural director at the Rules Meeting in order to obtain your racquet.
THE SERVICE: The server continues to serve as along as he/she wins each rally. He/She earns one point for each rally won.

In the act of serving, the server must drop the ball to the floor between the service and short lines and on the first bounce hit it to the front wall.
The serve must hit the front wall first and must rebound so that it hits behind the short line. It may return by way of one side wall.

The following serves are illegal and any two in succession puts the server out:

-When the ball hits the front wall and fails to hit back of the short line.
-When the ball hits the front wall and two side walls before striking the floor.
-When the ball hits the front wall and either the ceiling or back wall before striking the floor.
-When the server steps beyond the service or short line in the act of serving.

RECEIVING:

a. The receiver must take up a position at least 5 feet behind the short line as the ball is being served.

b. The receiver may not run in over the short line to play a served ball.
c . The receiver does not have the option to play an illegally served ball.
d. The receiver may return a legally served ball either on the volley or the first bounce.
e. The ball may be returned by any combination of walls provided that it hits the front wall before it hits the floor.
f. A "hinder" is called when a player unintentionally interferes with an opponent. The point is replayed.
g. If the interference could have been avoided, an "avoidable hinder" is called and either a point or side-out is awarded, depending on who was serving.

SIDE OUT OR POINT IF:

a. An "avoidable hinder" occurs.
b. A legally served ball touches the server on the fly.
c. A served ball which hits the ceiling, floor, or side wall before striking the front wall.

CONDUCT: The "Honor System" will be used among the players in place of officials. Only the captains may speak to the commissioner and/or official about a questionable call.

The commissioner has the right to throw out a player for any reason the commissioner deems appropriate, including consistent arguing, obscene language, etc.

DISQUALIFICATIONS/FORFEITS: If a player is disqualified for any unsportsperson-like act, he/she will be suspended from league play until reinstated by the Recreation Sports Department. Any player suspended from league play will not receive a championship t-shirt should his/her team win.

Any team with a forfeit will not be eligible for any playoff game regardless of record.

Any team with two forfeits will be disqualified from further league play.

To qualify for a championship t-shirt, a player must have competed in at least two league games and the championship game.

Any disputes should be taken up with the commissioner on site. Any further discussion should be directed to the Intramural Director immediately following the game at ext 8350.
