IM Doubles Tennis

Starting the Match: The first ten minutes will be used as a warm-up period. Anyone not ready ten minutes after the scheduled start time will forfeit the match. (This would count as one loss in the double elimination tournament.) A coin toss determines who serves and which player begins at which end.
Equipment: Rackets can be signed out with proper ID. Please see the equipment manager before the day of the first match (x 5386). The Intramural Department will provide balls.

Playing Area: Games will be held on the tennis courts near the Sports Center main entrance.

GENERAL RULES:

All Doubles Tennis Rules Apply.

Serving: Players alternate serves: Player A serves the first game, player B the second and so on. They also alternate sides of the court they serve from beginning each game on the right side. The serve is made into the service court diagonally opposite the side the server is standing on. Players switch ends of the court at the end of the first, third, and subsequent alternate games.

Scoring: An eight game pro-set will be used and you must win by a margin of 2 (e.g. 8-6.) If it is tied at 7-7, a 7-point tie breaker (win by two) will be used. Scoring will be as follows for each player: First point, score is 15 Second point, score is 30 Third point, score is 40 Fourth point, the game is won. Adds will be used.

Returning Serve and Playing: The receiver must return the serve on the first bounce, hitting it over the net and into the opponent's court. A ball striking the boundary line is in play. After the serve, the players may volley by hitting the ball before it bounces or after one bounce.

Officiating: There are NO umpires. Defense will make all calls. Calls must be legitimate and in the spirit of the game. Commissioners will oversee any disputes.

Playoffs: TBD

Conduct: The "Honor System" will be used among the players in place of officials when officials are not present. Only the captains may speak to the commissioner and/or official about a questionable call.

The commissioner has the right to throw out a player for any reason the commissioner deems appropriate, including consistent arguing, obscene language, etc.

Disqualifications/Forfeits: If a player is disqualified for any unsportsperson-like act, he/she will be suspended from league play until reinstated by the Recreation Sports Department. Any player suspended from league play will not receive a championship t-shirt should his/her team win.

Any team with a forfeit will not be eligible for any playoff game regardless of record.

Any team with two forfeits will be disqualified from further league play.

To qualify for a championship t-shirt, a player must have competed in at least two league games and the championship game.

Any disputes should be taken up with the commissioner on site. Any further discussion should be directed to the Intramural Director immediately following the game at ext 8350.
