Jan 13, 19:25:04Skidmore -> EveryoneWelcome everyone! We'll begin in five minutes. Please submit your questions now.
Jan 13, 19:29:17Skidmore -> EveryoneOkay, here we go! The panelists will introduce themselves then we'll get started.
Jan 13, 19:29:18Dale_Admissions -> EveryoneHi, I am Dale Nemer, Associate Director of Admissions. I have been at Skidmore since 1991. My travel territories are MN, So. Calif., OH, and parts of Westchester ,NY.
Jan 13, 19:30:28Julie_Admissions -> EveryoneHello everyone! I'm Julie DiRoma, an Assistant Director of Admissions, and this is my fourth year at Skidmore. I travel to Texas, Central and Western New York State, Northern CA, and Fairfield and Litchfield Counties in CT. We're looking forward to answering your questions tonight!
Jan 13, 19:30:38Lisa_Admissions -> EveryoneMy name is Lisa Rinaolo-Johnson and I am one of the Associate Directors of Admissions. I have been a member of the Admissions office for 8 years and I graduated from Skidmore in 1988. I am also a Skidmore parent, my daughter is a sophomore here. I travel to Westchester, NY, western Massachusetts and Princeton, NJ.
Jan 13, 19:32:10Kendall_Student -> EveryoneHi there! I'm Kendall Gross, a junior at Skidmore from Los Angeles. I am an Education Studies major with a concentration in Theater, and currently am one of the moderators for the Facebook page for incoming Skidmore first year students.
Jan 13, 19:33:26Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hi there! My name is Ruby and I'm a senior at Emma Willard School and I'm so excited to speak with you all.
Jan 13, 19:35:00Participant -> Kendall_StudentWhat are your relationships like with the teachers at Skidmore? Are you close with a particular teacher?
Kendall_Student -> ParticpantThat's a great question, Keifer. When I was looking for a college, one of my most important criteria was that I'd be able to bond with my professors. I found that quality at Skidmore and am so grateful for the relationships I've developed with my professors. I can't say that I am close with all of the teachers I've had, but I've certainly made a handful of lasting connections. Professors, in general, are accessible, patient, and available outside of class time.
Jan 13, 19:35:25Participant -> Dale_AdmissionsHi there! My name is Ruby and I'm a senior at Emma Willard School and I'm so excited to speak with you all.
Dale_Admissions -> ParticpantHi Ruby, Any questions about Skidmore we can answer?
Jan 13, 19:35:44Lisa_Admissions -> EveryoneThe application deadline is January 15th for Regular Decision and Early Decision II, does anyone have any questions about applying?
Jan 13, 19:36:11Particpant -> Panelist(s)Do you offer pre-med advising? How does the career development center help students? Do you work one on one with an advisor, or is it more of a general resource center?
Jan 13, 19:37:09Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hello everyone, my name is Daisy Mairena and I will be sending in my application this Friday. I was wondering if I can just fax/mail my SAT scores or do I need to send it through college board?
Jan 13, 19:37:49Participant -> Kendall_StudentIn your day to day life, do you feel overwhelmed (by work, academics, social situations, etc) at Skidmore?
Kendall_Student -> ParticpantHi Bryan. I will admit that my first semester at Skidmore was overwhelming, primarily from a social stand point. But going to college is a huge transition so that temporary turmoil is to be expected! Skidmore provided me with the community and support I needed to overcome that initial difficulty, and I have been thoroughly enjoying my time ever since.
Jan 13, 19:38:22Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hi! I'm Sarah, a junior at Nardin Academy in Buffalo, NY. Obviously it's a bit early for me to be applying to schools, but I know that I want to be an English major, so I was wondering what you could tell me about Skidmore's English program.
Jan 13, 19:38:26Participant -> Kendall_StudentHi there! My name is Ruby and I'm a senior at Emma Willard School and I'm so excited to speak with you all.
Kendall_Student -> ParticpantHi Ruby! Any questions? Glad you could join us.
Jan 13, 19:38:57Particpant -> Panelist(s)Is the class size small enough, that the teacher remembers your name?
Jan 13, 19:38:58Participant -> Dale_AdmissionsDo you offer pre-med advising? How does the career development center help students? Do you work one on one with an advisor, or is it more of a general resource center?
Dale_Admissions -> ParticpantYes pre-med and all advising starts as soon as you like. Our career services office is very user friendly, beginning as early as your freshman year, and is a life long resource for our alumni. You can work one-one or as a resource center.
Jan 13, 19:39:16Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hello everyone! My name is Maya and I'm a junior at Elmont Memorial High School :)
Jan 13, 19:39:56Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hello! This is Najma Shy from Wilbraham and Monson Academy. Can someone please tell me some things about Skidmore's location and local opportunities? :)
Jan 13, 19:39:58Particpant -> Panelist(s)What's the campus life like at Skidmore?
Jan 13, 19:40:00Participant -> Julie_AdmissionsHello everyone, my name is Daisy Mairena and I will be sending in my application this Friday. I was wondering if I can just fax/mail my SAT scores or do I need to send it through college board?
Julie_Admissions -> ParticpantHi Daisy! Thanks for your question. We can accept SAT scores as official if they are sent directly from the College Board or if they are faxed/emailed to our office from your guidance counselor.
Jan 13, 19:41:40Participant -> Kendall_StudentFor the students: What does your average day look like during a regular semester?
Kendall_Student -> ParticpantHey IanLevy. Unfortunately, there is not one clear answer I can give you - every student's schedule is going to be different depending on the amount of academic credits they choose to undertake, how involved they become in clubs and campus life, how much time they devote to their studies and social life, etc. Is there a more specific answer you were looking for that I might be able to help you with?
Jan 13, 19:43:02Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hello, My name is Crystal and I am a senior at Mount Vernon High School. How is diversity at Skidmore? Would you say that it's easy for minority students to assimilate into the community, or is it somewhat of a challenge?
Jan 13, 19:43:31Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hi I'm Ariana and I'm a senior at Silver Lake Regional High School in Kingston MA. I'm so exited to be speaking with all of you! I was wondering about deciding a major on the common app? I'm really in to music/theatre at my school but I also like Science,English,Spanish, and Psychology..should I choose undeclared. The reason I'm unsure is I was thinking about auditioning of there were still times available but can an undeclared applicant still submit or attend a music audition as part of the application?
Jan 13, 19:44:12Participant -> Dale_AdmissionsHello! This is Najma Shy from Wilbraham and Monson Academy. Can someone please tell me some things about Skidmore's location and local opportunities? :)
Dale_Admissions -> ParticpantSaratoga Springs is about 3 hours from your high school. It is a wonderfully charming small city with great restaurants, museums, a vibrant downtown and nearby outdoor activities. Our students have many opportunities for volunteerism as well as jobs and internships. Many of our students choose to spend a summer in Saratoga as there are many jobs and opportunities.
Jan 13, 19:44:22Participant -> Lisa_AdmissionsHi! I'm Sarah, a junior at Nardin Academy in Buffalo, NY. Obviously it's a bit early for me to be applying to schools, but I know that I want to be an English major, so I was wondering what you could tell me about Skidmore's English program.
Lisa_Admissions -> ParticpantHi Sarah, thanks for joining us! English is one of our most popular majors so there are numerous classes offered in this department. A few of our English faculty have been recognized by Princeton Review as some of the best in the country. Classes in English tend to be small discussion based classes. We do have creative writing classes that are offered within the English major. I suggest that you visit the English department webpage on the Skidmore site to see the class offerings and faculty.
Jan 13, 19:45:07Particpant -> Panelist(s)For the students: How was your freshman year? How was your overall experience?
Jan 13, 19:46:31Participant -> Kendall_StudentIs the class size small enough, that the teacher remembers your name?
Kendall_Student -> ParticpantHi Daisy. Some classes are lectures consisting of upwards for 50 students. While this format of class is not the norm, they do exist, and in such settings, it is no guarantee that the professor will remember your name. However, the two lecture courses I've taken at Skidmore were divided into labs of 10-20 students and that is when I was able to get to know my professor on a more personal level. For most classes, I'd say, your professor will know your name. However, it is up to you, as the student, to introduce yourself.
Jan 13, 19:47:11Particpant -> Panelist(s)What is your favorite part of an application to read? Why do you like it?
Jan 13, 19:48:15Participant -> Kendall_StudentWhat's the campus life like at Skidmore?
Kendall_Student -> ParticpantHi Oatmeal - campus life at Skidmore is alive and exciting! There is always a concert to attend, a lecture to go to, a performance to see...and if there ever isn't, there are plenty of opportunities for you to get something going yourself!
Jan 13, 19:48:42Participant -> Dale_AdmissionsWhat is your favorite part of an application to read? Why do you like it?
Dale_Admissions -> ParticpantRuby, I really enjoy the teacher recommendations. I am impressed with how much they care and how well they know their students and how many really capture the essence of the student. I find many very helpful!
Jan 13, 19:49:18Participant -> Julie_AdmissionsHello, My name is Crystal and I am a senior at Mount Vernon High School. How is diversity at Skidmore? Would you say that it's easy for minority students to assimilate into the community, or is it somewhat of a challenge?
Julie_Admissions -> ParticpantHi Crystal! Diversity is a priority at Skidmore. About 22% of our students self-identify as students of color, and about 8% of our students are international students (another 6% are dual citizens with the US and one or more other countries). We have a fantastic office on campus - Office of Student Diversity Programs - that is very involved in diversity initiatives on campus. Students describe Skidmore as an open and accepting community and find it easy to get involved.
Jan 13, 19:49:20Particpant -> Panelist(s)Thank you. I'd also like to ask about diversity. How diverse does the campus feel in regard to not only race but ideological backgrounds as well? And, are there groups and support systems for ethnic minorities?
Jan 13, 19:49:28Participant -> Kendall_StudentFor the students: How was your freshman year? How was your overall experience?
Kendall_Student -> ParticpantMy freshman year was rocky to begin with, considering I had never been through such a drastic transition before. However, Skidmore provided me with the optimal environment to persevere and get back on track and now I couldn't be happier.
Jan 13, 19:50:10Particpant -> Panelist(s)How does the housing work at Skidmore? Do most students live on campus? Are the dorms co-ed?
Jan 13, 19:50:53Participant -> Lisa_AdmissionsHi I'm Ariana and I'm a senior at Silver Lake Regional High School in Kingston MA.
Lisa_Admissions -> ParticpantHi Ariana, thanks for your question. At Skidmore we do not look at the major listed when we read applications because if you are accepted to Skidmore you can major in any department. Skidmore students can come in knowing what they want to do and start taking classes in those areas or they can change their mind. Students here have until the end of sophomore year to declare a major. There are no auditions required to be a music or theater major. The only exception is if you wanted to apply for our Filene music scholarship. That requires the student to send an audition through SlideRoom on the Common Application.
Jan 13, 19:51:40Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hello! I was wondering about the strength of the mathematics department. Are there opportunities for research? Are the professors accessible? Are students well-prepared for graduate school?
Jan 13, 19:52:18Participant -> Julie_AdmissionsWhat is your favorite part of an application to read? Why do you like it?
Julie_Admissions -> ParticpantHi Ruby! I really enjoy seeing students' activities lists and involvement. It's great to see where students are spending their time outside of the classroom (and homework!).
Jan 13, 19:53:08Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hello. I am passionate about many arts, specifically dance and spoken word/poetry. What opportunities are there for me to maintain, develop, and showcase these things on campus?
Jan 13, 19:54:26Participant -> Lisa_AdmissionsWhat is your favorite part of an application to read? Why do you like it?
Lisa_Admissions -> ParticpantGreat question Ruby! I enjoy reading the Guidance Counselor/College Counselor recommendation because they usually have great insight to the character and activities of each student. I enjoy reading the Common Application essay as well!
Jan 13, 19:55:04Particpant -> Panelist(s)[RETURNED]What is your favorite part of an application to read? Why do you like it?
Jan 13, 19:55:59Participant -> Dale_AdmissionsHow does the housing work at Skidmore? Do most students live on campus? Are the dorms co-ed?
Dale_Admissions -> ParticpantHousing is guaranteed all four years at Skidmore. Our freshman are housed in dorms according to their first year seminar. From soph. year on, it is a lottery system. Sophomores tend to live in dorms or in our new Hillside townhouses. Many juniors and seniors live in the Northwoods townhouses. About 5% of our students live off-campus in town. Our dorms are ranked highly in the college guide books. We do not have a "freshman" dorm, all are mixed. Typically students are in a suite-style set-up.
Jan 13, 19:56:26Particpant -> Panelist(s)Are there scholarships that I can apply besides the filene scholarship and the porter scholarship?
Jan 13, 20:00:22Participant -> Julie_AdmissionsThank you. I'd also like to ask about diversity. How diverse does the campus feel in regard to not only race but ideological backgrounds as well? And, are there groups and support systems for ethnic minorities?
Julie_Admissions -> ParticpantHello! Especially among small liberal arts college, Skidmore is a diverse community. Students come from a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds, geographic areas, and academic interests. Skidmore students tend to be very accepting of others, no matter what their personal opinions are, so there are political groups on campus for all students, too. Student Academic Services is an office that supports all students (they offer peer tutoring, study sessions, etc) and the Office of Student Diversity Programs is also a great office that supports student diversity organizations. Skidmore also offers an academic minor in Intergroup Relations (IGR). Through this program, students are trained as facilitators to lead dialogues about race and identity.
Jan 13, 20:01:37Particpant -> Panelist(s)How does Skidmore help you after graduation? Do you have a strong post-grad network? Where do most people end up after their senior year?
Jan 13, 20:01:44Participant -> Julie_AdmissionsAre there scholarships that I can apply besides the filene scholarship and the porter scholarship?
Julie_Admissions -> ParticpantHi Jackie! Most of Skidmore's financial aid is need-based, so the Porter and Filene Scholarships are the only merit-based awards available. For students applying for need-based aid, Skidmore commits to meeting 100% of demonstrated need.
Jan 13, 20:02:29Participant -> Lisa_AdmissionsHello! I was wondering about the strength of the mathematics department. Are there opportunities for research? Are the professors accessible? Are students well-prepared for graduate school?
Lisa_Admissions -> ParticpantWe have a math/science scholarship called the Porter scholarship so we are enrolling students each year who are very strong in the math and science areas. Classes tend to be small so that means that professors get to know their students very well. They all have scheduled office hours. Research happens frequently at Skidmore. Our students can start doing research as early on as the 2nd semester of their freshmen year. Due to the small classes, the work required for each class, the hands-on opportunities for research and internships and the connection made with professors, students are well-prepared for graduate school.
Jan 13, 20:02:52Participant -> Dale_AdmissionsHello. I am passionate about many arts, specifically dance and spoken word/poetry. What opportunities are there for me to maintain, develop, and showcase these things on campus?
Dale_Admissions -> ParticpantWe have an outstanding, one of the top five in the USA, Dance Dep't with focus on ballet, modern and jazz, with choreography opportunities. You can either major, minor or just take dance classes and you audition for class placement when you arrive in the fall. We also have many extra-curricular dance groups: hiphop, tap, Indian dance and Irish step, for example. There are dance performances throughout each semester and we also bring in professional companies to perform and teach master classes.

Spoken word/poetry events happen frequently on campus.
Jan 13, 20:04:20Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hi my name is Jackie. I think I forgot to say that earlier. I want to major in theatre and I was wondering if there are many alumni who work in both theatre and in film that could help aid a student in finding internships and jobs in other places as well as Saratoga.
Jan 13, 20:04:40Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hi! What would you say distinguishes Skidmore from all the other liberal arts colleges?
Jan 13, 20:04:50Particpant -> Panelist(s)If a student is experiencing trouble with a course at Skidmore what degree of help is accessible to him or her?
Jan 13, 20:04:53Particpant -> Panelist(s)Is it difficult to balance your course work with extracurricular activities? How many extracurricular activities would you say the average student participates in?
Jan 13, 20:05:09Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hello everyone! I want to become a writer (as of the moment, at least), and I was wondering how Skidmore would prepare me for that type of career.
Jan 13, 20:07:05Particpant -> Panelist(s)I have taken both the SAT and the ACT. Does Skidmore prefer one over the other or should I send both?
Jan 13, 20:07:52Particpant -> Panelist(s)I really like community service. Are there many community service opportunities?
Jan 13, 20:09:01Participant -> Kendall_StudentHi my name is Jackie. I think I forgot to say that earlier. I want to major in theatre and I was wondering if there are many alumni who work in both theatre and in film that could help aid a student in finding internships and jobs in other places as well as Saratoga.
Kendall_Student -> ParticpantHi Jackie! The theater department at Skidmore is such a wonderful community - I feel so at home whenever I step into the JKB. However, there are so many additional opportunities available beyond what is on campus. So many of my friends in the department stay in Saratoga over the summer to do theater productions, and we have guests come in all the time with information about and "an in" to internships and job opportunities. So in short, yes - there are plenty of connections to be made.
Jan 13, 20:09:34Particpant -> Panelist(s)Thank you!
Jan 13, 20:09:54Participant -> Julie_AdmissionsI have taken both the SAT and the ACT. Does Skidmore prefer one over the other or should I send both?
Julie_Admissions -> ParticpantHi Daniel! We don't prefer one test over the other, so feel free to send both scores and we will use the best one for your application.
Jan 13, 20:10:08Participant -> Dale_AdmissionsHello everyone! I want to become a writer (as of the moment, at least), and I was wondering how Skidmore would prepare me for that type of career.
Dale_Admissions -> ParticpantWe have an outstanding, nationally ranked English Department with award winning faculty (Pulitzer!)All of the faulty are available and accessible. Skidmore offers many internships , in Saratoga , as well as in major cities, and collaborative research opportunities for students to work closely with faculty. We also publish a professional magazine: Salmagundi.
Jan 13, 20:10:23Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hi. What's the food on campus like?
Jan 13, 20:11:52Participant -> Lisa_AdmissionsHow does Skidmore help you after graduation? Do you have a strong post-grad network? Where do most people end up after their senior year?
Lisa_Admissions -> ParticpantCrystal, Skidmore absolutely helps students after graduation. There is a huge alumni database for students to access for networking purposes. The services offered by the career services department is for current students and alumni of any age. About 70% of graduates enter the workforce upon graduation and about 20% go directly to graduate school. That number of those who are in graduate school or have completed graduated school increases to about 55% within 5 years of graduation.
Jan 13, 20:12:13Particpant -> Panelist(s)If the number of students enrolled in a class fall below a certain number, will the class be canceled?
Jan 13, 20:12:51Participant -> Julie_AdmissionsI really like community service. Are there many community service opportunities?
Julie_Admissions -> ParticpantHi Jackie! One of our largest clubs at Skidmore is Benef-Action, which is our community service group. They oversee many of the volunteer opportunities - both on-campus and in the local community. We also have a Director of Community Service on staff - her responsibility is to find community service opportunities for students. It's impressive to see that so many Skidmore students want to give back to their community!
Jan 13, 20:13:48Participant -> Dale_AdmissionsIf the number of students enrolled in a class fall below a certain number, will the class be canceled?
Dale_Admissions -> ParticpantNot to my knowledge, in fact, I have heard of classes as small as five.
Jan 13, 20:14:13Particpant -> Panelist(s)Thank you so much for answering my questions. One final question: how involved and informed is the campus regarding current events/issues and global awareness. The recent terrorist attacks and Ferguson for example.
Jan 13, 20:14:13Participant -> Kendall_StudentHi! What would you say distinguishes Skidmore from all the other liberal arts colleges?
Kendall_Student -> ParticpantI'm not sure I can really put my answer to this question into words. For me, as cliche as it may sound, Skidmore simply *feels* good - I step onto campus and am immediately comforted by the inviting, academic, and accepting environment. The Skidmore community is a unique community that I am so proud and honored to be a part of. Some of my favorite qualities of Skidmore are: the importance placed on receiving a profound education, the extracurricular activity, the accessibility and relatability of the professors, and the endless opportunities to get involved.
Jan 13, 20:14:21Particpant -> Panelist(s)I see that your neuroscience major offers a BA, not a BS. Does that effect what kind of graduate school programs you can move onto (ie. PA School, med school, PhD in a science, etc)
Jan 13, 20:15:27Participant -> Kendall_StudentIf a student is experiencing trouble with a course at Skidmore what degree of help is accessible to him or her?
Kendall_Student -> ParticpantSkidmore has a writing center, which is student run, and available to everyone (by appointment). In addition, you can email your professors to schedule a meeting, and there is also SAS (student academic services) as well as tutors. You wouldn't be troubled for long!
Jan 13, 20:15:47Particpant -> Panelist(s)I am from a suburb that is 15 minutes outside of Boston. Is it hard to transition from that kind of environment to a quieter scene?
Jan 13, 20:15:49Particpant -> Panelist(s)Where are most of the students from?
Jan 13, 20:16:24Participant -> Kendall_StudentIs it difficult to balance your course work with extracurricular activities? How many extracurricular activities would you say the average student participates in?
Kendall_Student -> ParticpantHi Crystal - I'm not sure there is an "average" number of activities a student participates in...it really depends. One student may be committed to a sports team and stick to just that, while others may be in a comedy club, a singing group, and on the academic council. It ranges! Balancing extracurriculars with school work is all about practice and prioritizing - it's a fun process!
Jan 13, 20:17:28Particpant -> Panelist(s)What is the most prominent or memorable on-campus tradition?
Jan 13, 20:17:47Participant -> Kendall_StudentHi. What's the food on campus like?
Kendall_Student -> ParticpantWe have an award winning dining hall - it is delicious! And if you ever don't like what is being served one day, there is always a salad bar, a pasta station, and a DIY grill.
Jan 13, 20:18:42Participant -> Kendall_StudentI am from a suburb that is 15 minutes outside of Boston. Is it hard to transition from that kind of environment to a quieter scene?
Kendall_Student -> ParticpantHi Jackie. I made the switch from the hustle and bustle of L.A. to the calm mini-city that is Saratoga Springs. While it was a bit of a culture shock, I loved adjusting to the slower pace...and Saratoga (or the towns just outside of it) has everything you'd need.
Jan 13, 20:19:02Participant -> Dale_AdmissionsWhere are most of the students from?
Dale_Admissions -> ParticpantHi Jackie, The majority of our students are from Wash., DC north: the I-95 corridor. However, California is our fifth most popular state. We are 8% international. Importantly, our students stay on campus on the weekends and enjoy campus activities as well as Saratoga Springs.
Jan 13, 20:19:48Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hi! My name is Clarey and I'm a senior at Edgemont High School in Scarsdale, NY. I was wondering if you could tell me a bit more about the education department and any programs you have with nearby schools to get hands-on teaching experience? Thank you!
Jan 13, 20:19:53Participant -> Kendall_StudentWhat is the most prominent or memorable on-campus tradition?
Kendall_Student -> ParticpantThere are so many!! Around the holidays is the tree-lighting ceremony, every fall there is a Beatlemore concert, Fun Day is always a big hit...the list goes on
Jan 13, 20:20:05Particpant -> Panelist(s)What are the options for students who don't want to major in music but still want to pursue it? Are there different levels of orchestras and ensembles?
Jan 13, 20:20:27Particpant -> Panelist(s)Do you recommend that students have a car? Is there transportation to get around the local areas?
Jan 13, 20:20:28Participant -> Julie_AdmissionsI see that your neuroscience major offers a BA, not a BS. Does that effect what kind of graduate school programs you can move onto (ie. PA School, med school, PhD in a science, etc)
Julie_Admissions -> ParticpantHi Ruby! Many of our neuroscience students are also heavily involved in research with a professor. Students are eligible to begin research starting in 2nd semester of their freshman year. In addition to research during the academic year, we have about 100 students who stay on campus in the summer and receive stipends for their full-time research (room and board is also covered). Our science students are very successful in applying to graduate programs.
Jan 13, 20:23:28Participant -> Lisa_AdmissionsThank you so much for answering my questions. One final question: how involved and informed is the campus regarding current events/issues and global awareness. The recent terrorist attacks and Ferguson for example.
Lisa_Admissions -> ParticpantI feel like the Skidmore community, students, faculty and staff are very informed about current events. I am aware that recently a march was organized by students from campus to downtown Saratoga Springs to protest the events in Ferguson. I also was one of many staff, faculty and students who participated in a die-in organized by our students to raise awareness about the death of Eric Garner. Currently there is a show at the Tang Teaching Museum called, "Hope and Anger the Civil Rights Movement and Beyond." We have an office on campus that promotes cross cultural understanding and positive relationships in support of an inclusive campus community called the Office of Students Diversity Programs, www.skidmore.edu/osdp.
Jan 13, 20:25:44Particpant -> Panelist(s)How popular is the Skidmore dance department? What kinds of dance classes are offered?
Jan 13, 20:26:10Particpant -> Panelist(s)I love to be involved with visual art, but I'm not that good at it. I love to hang out in my art room at school and it is a fun and creative environment. Are there programs/places I could just go to hang out and make art like that at Skidmore?
Jan 13, 20:26:13Participant -> Kendall_StudentHi! My name is Clarey and I'm a senior at Edgemont High School in Scarsdale, NY. I was wondering if you could tell me a bit more about the education department and any programs you have with nearby schools to get hands-on teaching experience? Thank you!
Kendall_Student -> ParticpantHi Clarey! I could go on for HOURS about the education department! Are there any specific questions I might be able to answer for you?

The hands-on teaching experience begins right off the bat; there are two daycares on the Skidmore College campus where education students can volunteer or work, and are often required to complete class assignments at. Then, starting the second semester of junior year, you begin student teaching at neighborhood schools! Before then, there are plenty of opportunities to tutor or babysit...and help out at the daycares!
Jan 13, 20:27:07Particpant -> Panelist(s)What does Skidmore look for in their students?
Jan 13, 20:27:30Participant -> Kendall_StudentDo you recommend that students have a car? Is there transportation to get around the local areas?
Kendall_Student -> ParticpantHi Jackie. A car is a luxury - nice to have, but unnecessary. There is a bus that goes to downtown Saratoga (and neighboring towns) very often, taxis, and upperclassmen with cars.

Jan 13, 20:27:59Participant -> Dale_AdmissionsWhat are the options for students who don't want to major in music but still want to pursue it? Are there different levels of orchestras and ensembles?
Dale_Admissions -> ParticpantDear Klee, Students may either major, minor or just take music classes. We have vocal, instrumental, theory and ethnomusicology classes as well as a recording studio. In fact, many students double major in business and music. We also have six a capella groups, gospel choir, madrigal group, wind ensemble, Japanese drumming and many jazz bands, In addition, Skidmore has a campus -wide community choir, orchestra and chamber group. We also have many rock bands. Lots of practice rooms too.Check our our Beatlemania Weekend!

Jan 13, 20:31:54Participant -> Kendall_StudentThanks for your response Kendall, that sounds amazing! Is there a fifth-year masters program at Skidmore?
Kendall_Student -> ParticpantIt IS amazing! And I'd be happy to answer any more of your questions as they arise - I'm an administrator on the Skidmore Facebook pages so you can find and message me from there. There is a 5th year program, however I don't know much about it, I'm sorry to say!
Jan 13, 20:33:02Participant -> Kendall_StudentAre all first year dorms triples? Do you get to choose if you live in a triple versus a double?
Kendall_Student -> ParticpantIt is rare that a First Year would not be placed in a triple.
Jan 13, 20:33:19Participant -> Julie_AdmissionsI love to be involved with visual art, but I'm not that good at it. I love to hang out in my art room at school and it is a fun and creative environment. Are there programs/places I could just go to hang out and make art like that at Skidmore?
Julie_Admissions -> ParticpantHi Jackie! We have a lot of student groups that are involved in art on campus - one is Random Acts of Craft, which is an arts and crafts club. Any student can take a class in the Art Department, too, and you can choose to take a class pass/fail rather than for a grade.
Jan 13, 20:33:24Participant -> Dale_AdmissionsHow popular is the Skidmore dance department? What kinds of dance classes are offered?
Dale_Admissions -> ParticpantIt is not one of larger departments but many students pass through. For example, we have a one semester arts requirement and a good number of students, male and female, take an intro dance class. Our classes are in ballet, modern, jazz, improv, and the interdisciplinary Dance and Society. We graduate about 25 dance majors a year. In town, we have the National Dance Museum and in the summer the NYC Ballet performs in our town for a two week period.

Jan 13, 20:36:36Participant -> Julie_AdmissionsIs financial need considered in the admissions process? If so, is it a significant factor?

Jan 13, 20:38:35Particpant -> Panelist(s)Thank you Lisa! I'm interested in Math and I am looking at Porter Scholarship. Do I have to be interested in both Math and Science?
Jan 13, 20:38:48Participant -> Julie_AdmissionsCan you describe the different types of campus jobs?
Julie_Admissions -> ParticpantThere are many different jobs on campus available for students! Working in the dining hall, as academic department assistants, in the box offices on campus, and as tour guides - these are just a few.
Jan 13, 20:40:39Particpant -> Panelist(s)How does getting a job on campus work? Do students who need financial help get priority? Is it still possible for someone who is not receiving financial aid to get a job on campus?
Jan 13, 20:41:40Particpant -> Panelist(s)Thank you for answering my questions!
Jan 13, 20:44:51Participant -> Julie_AdmissionsWhat does Skidmore look for in their students?
Julie_Admissions -> ParticpantHello! Applications are reviewed holistically at Skidmore. Academics are most important in the process- we look for students who have taken rigorous classes and have done well in them. Teacher recommendations, personal essay, and activities/involvement give us a sense of what students are like in the classroom and where they spend their time outside of school. Testing is also a part of our application review, though it is a secondary factor.
Jan 13, 20:44:57Participant -> Lisa_AdmissionsThank you Lisa! I'm interested in Math and I am looking at Porter Scholarship. Do I have to be interested in both Math and Science?
Lisa_Admissions -> ParticpantChloe, you do not have to be interested in studying science to apply for the Porter scholarship but you do need to have a demonstrated passion for either math or science. Strong grades and testing in math and/or science will be considered when reviewing this scholarship. There is also a required essay when applying for the Porter Scholarship.
Jan 13, 20:45:13Participant -> Dale_AdmissionsWhat is the average GPA and SAT for Skidmore?
Dale_Admissions -> ParticpantAs high schools, their programs and grading scales vary widely it is hard to give an average. Typically a B+ average will put a student in the mix. We look closely at a students transcript and the depth and rigor of their program vis-a-vis what is offered at their school. The median SAT last year was 1310, for verbal/math. The median ACT was 30.

Jan 13, 20:47:54Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hi, my name is Gabriel and I am a senior at High Tech High School in North Bergen, NJ. Is there a strong art scene in the area? I do not plan on majoring in music, but I play in a few bands and hope to play in at least one in college as well. Is there a local music scene?
Jan 13, 20:49:03Particpant -> Panelist(s)Can I submit anything else or should I do anything else other than Common Application, Porter scholarship, and art supplement to increase my chance of getting accepted to Skidmore?
Jan 13, 20:49:30Participant -> Julie_AdmissionsHow does getting a job on campus work? Do students who need financial help get priority? Is it still possible for someone who is not receiving financial aid to get a job on campus?
Julie_Admissions -> ParticpantHello! Students who have work study as part of their financial aid package are guaranteed a certain amount of work on campus; however, there are more than enough jobs on campus for any student who would like one. While some jobs require applications, some students are recommended by their professors.
Jan 13, 20:49:59Participant -> Lisa_AdmissionsThank you for helping me!
Lisa_Admissions -> ParticpantYou are welcome!

Jan 13, 20:52:41Particpant -> Panelist(s)Although an art portfolio is not required, is it recommended to submit one anyway?
Jan 13, 20:54:32Participant -> Julie_AdmissionsWhere are popular places for students to hang out on campus?
Julie_Admissions -> ParticpantHi Jackie! Many students hang out in the Case Student Center - there's a cyber cafe and a diner there. The Dining Hall is also a popular spot - especially for first year students with unlimited meal plans. Falstaff's is an on-campus performance venue. When the weather is nice, you'll find most students out on the green!
Jan 13, 20:55:56Particpant -> Panelist(s)Are admission notifications only sent through the mail or can you receive them through an online portal? When will they be sent out?

I do not plan on majoring in music, but I play in a few bands and hope to play in at least one in college as well. Is there a local music scene?
Lisa_Admissions -> ParticpantSaratoga Springs is a tourist destination in the summer. We have over 100 restaurants and many of them hire live bands. Skidmore is home to many student bands that play on and off campus. You should check out Beatlemore Skidmania on www.facebook.com/BeatlemoreSkidmania. It is a great showcase of our student bands. I even had one of our student bands play recently at my wedding for the cocktail hour and they were amazing!
Jan 13, 20:57:44Particpant -> Panelist(s)Wow, that sounds great! Thank you and congratulations on the wedding.
Jan 13, 20:58:13Participant -> Julie_AdmissionsAlthough an art portfolio is not required, is it recommended to submit one anyway?
Julie_Admissions -> ParticpantHello Olivia! You are welcome to submit an art portfolio if you'd like to, but one is not required. The Art Department will review art portfolio submissions and their feedback will be an additional piece of information in your application.
Jan 13, 20:59:05Particpant -> Panelist(s)Is it possible to get a scholarship based on the art portfolio? Thank you for answering my questions!
Jan 13, 20:59:33Participant -> Lisa_AdmissionsWow, that sounds great! Thank you and congratulations on the wedding.
Lisa_Admissions -> ParticpantThanks Gabriel!
Jan 13, 20:59:41Participant -> Dale_AdmissionsIs studying abroad a common choice at Skidmore? What is the process for applying to study abroad like?
Dale_Admissions -> ParticpantDear Elliot, 65% of our students study abroad. Most for a semester, some for a full year, and summer terms, mini-classes, travel seminars are also offered. In addition, each year approximately 38 freshmen start their first year in London and then join their class in January. Students can even go more than once. The Office of Off-Campus Studies is very helpful, in terms of finding just the right location and program. Our financial aid applies to off-campus study. A particular GPA or language proficiency might be required, depending on the program. We have six programs of our own and are affiliated with over 130 other programs around the world.
Jan 13, 20:59:49Participant -> Lisa_AdmissionsAre admission notifications only sent through the mail or can you receive them through an online portal? When will they be sent out?
Lisa_Admissions -> ParticpantAll of our decisions are only sent in the mail. The Early Decision II applicants will find out their decision around February 15th and the Regular Decision applicants will find out by the end of March.
Jan 13, 21:00:05Participant -> Julie_AdmissionsWhat kind of performance venue is fall staffs?
