Dec 04, 19:22:28Skidmore -> EveryoneWelcome to our live chat! We'll begin in a few minutes. Pelase submit your questions now.
Dec 04, 19:27:54Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hello, I am a sophomore in college thinking about transferring to Skidmore. I had questions regarding financial aid and scholarships. How much financial aid can Skidmore give to international students? also, are there any scholarships that international students can apply for?
Dec 04, 19:29:08Particpant -> Panelist(s)The Skidmore Health Care Professions Advising Committee is fairly bare bones. How active/effective is the HPAC in assisting students plan for applying to medical school? What are the acceptance rates for well qualified students (assume GPA is greater than 3.5) out of Skidmore into a Medical School? What are the average MCAT scores like for Skidmore students? Finally where have Skidmore students gone to for medical school?
Dec 04, 19:29:58Skidmore -> EveryoneWelcome to the live chat, everyone. Before we begin, the panelists will introduce themselves.
Dec 04, 19:30:19Admissions_Matt -> EveryoneHi all. I'm Matt Cohen and I'm Assoc. Director of Admissions. I coordinate transfer admissions at Skidmore and I'd be happy to answer any questions for you.
Dec 04, 19:30:34Student_Lauren -> EveryoneHi! I'm Lauren. I am a junior here at Skidmore, and I transferred here at the beginning of my sophomore year. I am involved in an a cappella group on campus, and I have various on campus jobs to keep me busy. I am an avid runner, and I am studying International affairs and environmental science. Ask me anything!
Dec 04, 19:31:38Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hi lauren, what made you decide that Skidmore was the college for you?
Dec 04, 19:31:42Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hello!
Dec 04, 19:31:48Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hi!
Dec 04, 19:31:59Participant -> Admissions_MattHello, My name is Nick Radwan, and I am from Buffalo, NY. I am currently a Biology Major at Niagara University, however, I am exploring other academic options. I have seen Skidmore College's campus and it is absolutely beautiful to say the least. I was curious if Skidmore offers a Neuroscience major. I was also curious about applying, and since I would only be able to come to Skidmore if it was affordable, If the financials of the application and admission process do not work out, will that affect my current academic scholarship at Niagara University? Thank you, Nick
Admissions_Matt -> ParticpantHello Nick. We do offer a full neuroscience major. We also offer financial aid for transfer studuents. Our decision here should not impact any aid you are currently receiving from Niagara.
Dec 04, 19:32:07Participant -> Student_LaurenCan you describe the Skidmore experience (the fun and the studying and the social life) in less than 20 words please?
Student_Lauren -> ParticpantQuite the challenge. Here I go: Academics are challenging and rigorous, but not cutthroat. Social life is incredible, with a LOT of options to get involved.
Dec 04, 19:32:50Particpant -> Panelist(s)How easy was it to get involved on campus and meet friends as a transfer student?
Dec 04, 19:32:55Participant -> Admissions_MattHello, I am a sophomore in college thinking about transferring to Skidmore. I had questions regarding financial aid and scholarships. How much financial aid can Skidmore give to international students? also, are there any scholarships that international students can apply for?
Admissions_Matt -> ParticpantHello risham94. We do have some need based financial aid for international students however that budget is limited and highly competitive. All aid is need-based.
Dec 04, 19:34:05Participant -> Student_LaurenHi lauren, what made you decide that Skidmore was the college for you?
Student_Lauren -> ParticpantHi! I originally thought I would go to a city school, but then I walked onto Skidmore's campus. It is extremely welcoming and friendly here with very good academics to go along with it. The campus is beautiful and spread out for how small of a school it is, with a really exciting downtown that compliments the campus nicely! It has the feel of a big school in the sense that there is always something to do or somewhere to go, but a small and inviting community.
Dec 04, 19:35:47Participant -> Student_LaurenHow easy was it to get involved on campus and meet friends as a transfer student?
Student_Lauren -> ParticpantHi Nina! It was extremely easy for me, and for the other transfers I know as well. There is a big club fair at the beginning of each semester and you can sign up for as many clubs as you want, then go to different meetings and see what you would like to be most involved with. The student body is so accepting of everybody (sounds cheesy, but it's true!) so finding your "group" happens quickly.
Dec 04, 19:36:21Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hi, I applied and was admitted to Skidmore last year. I am interested in transferring to Skidmore for Fall 2015. I am interested in psychology and education. What research opportunities are there? Since I was previously admitted, how would that affect my transfer process? Would I need to interview again? I interviewed with Jill Warmbier last year. I loved Skidmore when I visited and interviewed.
Dec 04, 19:36:44Particpant -> Panelist(s)Is there a large portion of the student body involved in athletics?
Dec 04, 19:36:51Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hello! My Name is Alexander Zimmerman, I am from New Jersey and am currently a community college student majoring in chemistry, with an intention to go into medicine thinking of transferring to Skidmore. I already submitted this question before the chat started and am unsure if it was seen. If so I apologize for the resubmission, still unsure how this system works. The Skidmore Health Care Professions Advising Committee is fairly bare bones.
Admissions_Matt -> ParticpantHello zimm. HPAC is a great advising program here at Skidmore that takes pre-health students through the whole process. Our acceptance rate into medical school is 75 to 80% depending on the year. This is well above the national average. The mean MCAT was 31.3 here. Please consult the HPAC website for a list of medical schools.
Dec 04, 19:38:55Participant -> Student_LaurenIs there a large portion of the student body involved in athletics?
Student_Lauren -> ParticpantHi Hannah! About 20% of the student body participates in athletics. Most are involved in multiple activities on campus, but the sports teams definitely get very close with each other. It is division 3 athletics, so students find that they can participate in their sport while still having time to do other things. There are also club and intramural teams to take part in.
Dec 04, 19:40:39Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hi my name is Hannah Wing. I was wondering if we had previously applied to and was admitted to Skidmore, if our previous application is still on file? Would/should we interview again?
Dec 04, 19:41:17Particpant -> Panelist(s)I am currently a sophomore student at CUNY Brooklyn looking to transfer for my junior year. I will have completed most of my required core classes and 12 credits (4 courses worth) in psychology when I transfer, which is one of two majors I'm interested in pursuing. Could you tell me a little bit about how Skidmore handles transfer credit, specifically those that go towards a degree? Does it depend on the classes?
Dec 04, 19:41:24Participant -> Admissions_MattHi, I applied and was admitted to Skidmore last year.
Admissions_Matt -> ParticpantHello Hannah_Wing. The fact that you were previously admitted so recently will only help a transfer application. We always appreciate return applicants. You are welcomed to interview again but that would not be required. There are abundant research opportunities in psychology - try looking at the department webpage for examples. We only offer elementary education here. Student teaching opportunities are great in the local school districts and we also have an on-campus preschool here.
Dec 04, 19:42:43Particpant -> Panelist(s)Does Skidmore have graduation requirements?
Dec 04, 19:43:30Participant -> Admissions_MattI am currently a sophomore student at CUNY Brooklyn looking to transfer for my junior year.
Admissions_Matt -> ParticpantHello Nina. Thanks for the question. We have a generous credit transfer policy. Liberal arts type classes with grades of C or better generally transfer. For more specific information on your classes you can contact our Registrar at registrar@skidmore.edu. Psychology is a major that requires many of its classes to be taken here at Skidmore. You can also ask the Registrar about that.
Dec 04, 19:43:47Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hi, my name is Emmanuel. I was wondering, what would you say the turnout for extracurricular events is like in general at Skidmore?
Dec 04, 19:44:48Particpant -> Panelist(s)Is substance free/wellness housing available to transfer students?
Dec 04, 19:45:45Participant -> Admissions_MattDoes Skidmore have graduation requirements?
Admissions_Matt -> ParticpantHello Hannah. We do have general requirements here but no core curriculum. Rather we have broadly defined 10 or 11 areas within the liberal arts that all students must satisfy before graduation. Most students who begin here as freshmen finish them in their first two years so for transfers it could take a little longer. Collectively they make up about 1/3 of your Skidmore credits.
Dec 04, 19:45:46Participant -> Student_LaurenHi, my name is Emmanuel. I was wondering, what would you say the turnout for extracurricular events is like in general at Skidmore?
Student_Lauren -> ParticpantHi Emmanuel! The turnout is usually really great. Because it is a small community, chances are you have friends in a lot of different clubs, groups or teams, meaning that you are likely to go out and support them and visa versa. Weekends are usually filled with events for students to go to, so you get to see all of the really cool things people are involved in.
Dec 04, 19:46:31Particpant -> Panelist(s)Wonderful! I am primarily interested in elementary education. How easy it for students to get involved in doing research? Is it competitive to try to be able to get involved with research? what is the social life like as a transfer student? What community service clubs/opportunities are there? Are theere social/cultural events held by the school often?
Dec 04, 19:47:19Participant -> Student_LaurenIs substance free/wellness housing available to transfer students?
Student_Lauren -> ParticpantHi! Yes. All residence halls are technically substance free, but there is a floor in one of our residence halls (it would be specified on your housing sheet) where students sign a pledge that they will live substance free lives, and will respect the choices of others on that floor.
Dec 04, 19:48:25Particpant -> Panelist(s)What is the housing situation like for transfer students who are upperclassmen?
Dec 04, 19:50:15Participant -> Student_LaurenWonderful! I am primarily interested in elementary education. How easy it for students to get involved in doing research? Is it competitive to try to be able to get involved with research? what is the social life like as a transfer student? What community service clubs/opportunities are there? Are theere social/cultural events held by the school often?
Student_Lauren -> ParticpantHi Hannah! Research is incredibly easy to get involved in here, and is available as early as second semester your freshman year here. It is as simple as approaching your professors and asking what you can help them with, or if they know of any opportunities for you. Our community service club is actually the second largest club on campus. The community reaches out to them with various projects and we'll send teams of students out to them. We also have Feedmore, a new club that works with a local soup kitchen. Social and cultural events happen almost every weekend. There are tons of clubs to get involved in, and they are frequently holding events. Is there any one club you were thinking about getting involved in besides community service?
Dec 04, 19:51:37Participant -> Admissions_MattWhat is the housing situation like for transfer students who are upperclassmen?
Admissions_Matt -> ParticpantHi Nina. Housing is guaranteed for all incoming transfers for their entire time here at Skidmore. It is not required. If you would prefer to live off campus you can take that option. Upperclass transfers are typically housed in the apartment style residence halls. For more information you can contact our housing office at reslife@skidmore.edu.
Dec 04, 19:53:29Particpant -> Panelist(s)I love to play soccer but more for fun and being on a team, but I don't know if I want to commit fully to club sports. Is there an intramural soccer team? Also I'm very interested in the dance department/dance clubs. I've been dancing for most of my life.
Dec 04, 19:56:10Participant -> Student_LaurenI love to play soccer but more for fun and being on a team, but I don't know if I want to commit fully to club sports. Is there an intramural soccer team? Also I'm very interested in the dance department/dance clubs. I've been dancing for most of my life.
Student_Lauren -> ParticpantThe intramural teams are actually extremely popular. I was on a team last semester with a bunch of my friends. Even within the intramurals there are varsity and JV teams, so the people who just want to goof off play with each other can do that while people who are slightly more serious can play too. It is a lot of fun. The dance department is open to everyone, regardless of major. You can take any of the classes and audition for any of the shows, and then there are a couple of dance clubs completely separate from the department that you can audition for or sign up for (there are some all inclusive ones too).
Dec 04, 19:59:24Particpant -> Panelist(s)How big are the classes at Skidmore? Are discussion based classes common? How frequently are classes taught by TAs rather than by professors?
Dec 04, 19:59:28Admissions_Matt -> EveryoneHey potential transfers! We're here and ready to answer your questions. So fire away.
Dec 04, 19:59:38Particpant -> Panelist(s)How big is the debate club? Does it participate in intercollegiate debates?
Dec 04, 20:01:05Particpant -> Panelist(s)What's the biggest class size I might have as a psychology major. Do TAs teach classes? How well do the students get to know their professor?
Dec 04, 20:01:07Participant -> Admissions_MattHow big are the classes at Skidmore? Are discussion based classes common? How frequently are classes taught by TAs rather than by professors?
Admissions_Matt -> ParticpantHi Nina. The average class size here is 17. Fewer than 1% of our classes have more than 50. Many are discussion based. We have no TAs here. Hurray!
Dec 04, 20:01:45Participant -> Student_LaurenHow big is the debate club? Does it participate in intercollegiate debates?
Student_Lauren -> ParticpantHi Zimm! Unfortunately I do not think we have a debate club, the SGA clubs and organizations website might have more info on that. However that is one that I could see many students here wanting to get involved in, so starting one is always an option. It just takes five students to get a club officially started.
Dec 04, 20:02:43Particpant -> Panelist(s)What sort of community service and local volunteer opportunities are available?
Dec 04, 20:02:47Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hello my name is Christian. I plan on transferring from a community college. Are there any transfer students?
Dec 04, 20:03:15Particpant -> Panelist(s)That's great to hear! Are computers usually allowed in the classroom? Also, what technology is available on campus for student use?
Dec 04, 20:04:03Participant -> Student_LaurenWhat's the biggest class size I might have as a psychology major. Do TAs teach classes? How well do the students get to know their professor?
Student_Lauren -> ParticpantIntro to Psych is the largest class here, around 120 students. However, it only gets that large because the professor (Sheldon Solomon) is #4 in his field, and everyone wants to take his class. After that the classes will be around 15-20 students. Professors are extremely engaged with students (even come to a lot of our events!) and are always available for questions or even coffee.
Dec 04, 20:04:52Participant -> Student_LaurenHello my name is Christian. I plan on transferring from a community college. Are there any transfer students?
Student_Lauren -> ParticpantHi Christian! Yes! I am a transfer student. I transferred in with about 24 other students, so there were others sharing a similar experience to mine. It was very comforting to have them there! You would not be the only one.
Dec 04, 20:04:52Participant -> Admissions_MattWhat sort of community service and local volunteer opportunities are available?
Admissions_Matt -> ParticpantHello Zimm. Our community service club is one of the largest clubs on campus. It's called BeneFaction and it's the umbrella group for all of the service that occurs here at Skidmore. The opportunities are numerous and it's very easy to get involved. Frankly it makes us a pretty nice neighbor here in Saratoga Springs.
Dec 04, 20:05:49Particpant -> Panelist(s)Is campus housing closed on breaks? I am an international student and on short breaks like Thanksgiving when i might not be going to visit family or friends i have in US, I may rather stay over
Dec 04, 20:07:03Participant -> Student_LaurenThat's great to hear! Are computers usually allowed in the classroom? Also, what technology is available on campus for student use?
Student_Lauren -> ParticpantComputer use depends on the professor. Some don't like it, but if you asked them separately if you can use your laptop most make exceptions. In the library has 130 computer stations for regular use, then in the basement of the library there is the Media Services room with about 30 computers with advanced software for video and photo editing, music, etc. There are also computers in the student center for students to use in passing!
Dec 04, 20:09:34Particpant -> Panelist(s)As Chris brought up, transfer students are not uncommon. However are there any transfers from community colleges? Does Skidmore look poorly upon those who start at a community school?
Dec 04, 20:09:45Participant -> Admissions_MattIs campus housing closed on breaks? I am an international student and on short breaks like Thanksgiving when i might not be going to visit family or friends i have in US, I may rather stay over
Admissions_Matt -> ParticpantHello Emmanuel. There are some dorms that remain open over Thanksgiving break. Many international students go home with fellow students. We also have a program where faculty and staff "adopt" international students and have them over for dinner on holidays.
Dec 04, 20:10:51Student_Lauren -> EveryoneShoot me any student life questions you all have!
Dec 04, 20:11:12Particpant -> Panelist(s)What does Skidmore look for in transfer students? Will highschool grades have an impact even with an associate's degree?
Dec 04, 20:11:43Participant -> Admissions_MattAs Chris brought up, transfer students are not uncommon. However are there any transfers from community colleges? Does Skidmore look poorly upon those who start at a community school?
Admissions_Matt -> ParticpantHello Zimm. Yes - we always review transfer applications from community college students. We are happy to welcome them here. Our GPA requirement is typically higher than our GPA requirement from 4 year colleges but we enroll CC students every year.
Dec 04, 20:13:02Participant -> Admissions_MattWhat does Skidmore look for in transfer students? Will highschool grades have an impact even with an associate's degree?
Admissions_Matt -> ParticpantHello Christian. We still require high school transcripts but we will place FAR more emphasis on college level work. If you have an associate's degree we will not require an SAT or ACT.
Dec 04, 20:13:32Particpant -> Panelist(s)How extensive are the library resources at Skidmore? Is it easy to find printers to use on campus?
Dec 04, 20:14:28Particpant -> Panelist(s)I saw while exploring the website that many off campus businesses take Skidmore ID cards. Could you tell me a little bit more about this, and about the ID cards in general?
Dec 04, 20:15:34Particpant -> Panelist(s)Skidmore has a reputation as being fairly "substance friendly", is there significant pressure on those who don't want to drink or use drugs to participate? Are they excluded to a significant extent from the social scene?
Dec 04, 20:16:11Participant -> Student_LaurenHow extensive are the library resources at Skidmore? Is it easy to find printers to use on campus?
Student_Lauren -> ParticpantThe library is great. 130 computers for people to use if you do not have your laptop, and free printing. The printers are very accessible and there is no limit to how many pages you can print. I brought my own and found that I never had to use it. The books at the library are very easy to find because the databases are easy to use. Also, if for some reason you cannot find the book/journal/etc that you need at our library, we are connected to a bookshare program and can have whatever you need here within two days.
Dec 04, 20:18:14Participant -> Student_LaurenSkidmore has a reputation as being fairly "substance friendly", is there significant pressure on those who don't want to drink or use drugs to participate? Are they excluded to a significant extent from the social scene?
Student_Lauren -> ParticpantHey zimm, definitely not. I actually am friends with more people who decide not to partake in the "party" scene than those who do. It is so easy to find other things to do on the weekends (club events, school sponsored events, concerts, shows, etc) that there is very little pressure to get into a situation that makes you uncomfortable. There is a lot of respect for peoples' choices here.
Dec 04, 20:18:27Participant -> Admissions_MattI saw while exploring the website that many off campus businesses take Skidmore ID cards. Could you tell me a little bit more about this, and about the ID cards in general?
Admissions_Matt -> ParticpantHi Nina. Yes - there are a great many businesses in town that take the Skidmore ID and offer discounts as well. Your ID card also gets you on public transportation for free here. It serves many other functions as well including a library card, a place for a declining balance for use in our book store and other campus sites and also as an entry to residence halls and our gym. Don't lose it! Ha ha.
Dec 04, 20:18:38Particpant -> Panelist(s)how many college recommendations are required? should it be from a particular field? how should college recommendations be sent to Skidmore?
Dec 04, 20:18:58Particpant -> Panelist(s)Hi, I'm wondering that is there easy access/ transportation to Boston?
Dec 04, 20:20:26Participant -> Student_LaurenHi, I'm wondering that is there easy access/ transportation to Boston?
Student_Lauren -> ParticpantHi! I'm from Boston, it is very easy to get to and from campus. There is an amtrak station right in town if you want to take the train. Every time I have needed a ride I've been able to find someone from the area to take me. We also have a rideshare website where people can post if they are going somewhere and how many seats that they have.
Dec 04, 20:21:00Participant -> Admissions_Matthow many college recommendations are required? should it be from a particular field? how should college recommendations be sent to Skidmore?
Admissions_Matt -> ParticpantHi Hannah. We require two professor letters. We have no preference for subjects, but it's a good idea to have them come from different subject areas from each other. Letters can be sent through the Common Application or by e-mail or mail directly to the Admissions office.
Dec 04, 20:21:09Skidmore -> EveryoneTen minute warning, everyone. Please submit your final questions now and we'll try to answer all the questions!
Dec 04, 20:21:54Particpant -> Panelist(s)Thank you! Also, just curious, what's the fare to get there and back?
Dec 04, 20:22:36Particpant -> Panelist(s)I am interested in double majoring in psychology and anthropology with a cultural focus - Skidmore's good anthropology program is a huge draw for me. Would this be too ambitious to finish within two years for someone transferring as a junior, even with most general requirement classes being completed through transfer credits? Thanks to both of you for your help!
Dec 04, 20:23:06Particpant -> Panelist(s)When I send in my application I will not have my associate's degree because I graduate in June. Will I have to submit SAT or ACT scores?
Dec 04, 20:24:13Participant -> Admissions_MattWhen I send in my application I will not have my associate's degree because I graduate in June. Will I have to submit SAT or ACT scores?
Admissions_Matt -> ParticpantHello Christian. We will not require standardized testing if you will have your two year degree.
Dec 04, 20:24:40Particpant -> Panelist(s)Some of the teaching staff at community colleges do not hold PhDs (some, though not many hold only masters), are their recommendations given less weight? Would it be in my interest to ask only PhD holders I have had as instructors for recommendations?
Dec 04, 20:25:14Particpant -> Panelist(s)With regards to course materials/readings, would you say there's quite a high level of real world application done in class?
Dec 04, 20:25:21Particpant -> Panelist(s)Does Skidmore offer assistance to first generation college students?
Dec 04, 20:25:24Participant -> Student_LaurenThank you! Also, just curious, what's the fare to get there and back?
Student_Lauren -> ParticpantRound trip I believe it can be anywhere from 80-120. A lot of students will use the amtrak station in Albany, because rates tend to be cheaper and there are more train options. Many bus services go directly into Albany from Saratoga.
Dec 04, 20:25:43Particpant -> Panelist(s)Also, is there a specific form the college professors need to fill out for the recommendation in addition to their letter?
Dec 04, 20:25:55Participant -> Admissions_MattI am interested in double majoring in psychology and anthropology with a cultural focus - Skidmore's good anthropology program is a huge draw for me. Would this be too ambitious to finish within two years for someone transferring as a junior, even with most general requirement classes being completed through transfer credits? Thanks to both of you for your help!
Admissions_Matt -> ParticpantHi Nina. Your plan may actually be too ambitious because of the psych major. That department is probably the most particular on campus in terms of having most classes taken here on campus. You'd probably be fine with the Anthro major. Perhaps you could consider a psych minor?
Dec 04, 20:26:06Particpant -> Panelist(s)how convenient is it getting to and from NYC?
Dec 04, 20:26:38Participant -> Admissions_MattSome of the teaching staff at community colleges do not hold PhDs (some, though not many hold only masters), are their recommendations given less weight? Would it be in my interest to ask only PhD holders I have had as instructors for recommendations?
Admissions_Matt -> ParticpantHi Zimm. That won't be a problem. Just ask the instructors who know you best. We won't consider their degree.
Dec 04, 20:26:56Participant -> Student_LaurenWith regards to course materials/readings, would you say there's quite a high level of real world application done in class?
Student_Lauren -> ParticpantYes. Professors here tend not to give "busy work", meaning that every piece of reading they will work hard to apply directly to course work or real life situations. I've appreciated this about my professors because I feel like I am learning valuable lessons and skills through my course work.
Dec 04, 20:27:25Participant -> Admissions_MattAlso, is there a specific form the college professors need to fill out for the recommendation in addition to their letter?
Admissions_Matt -> ParticpantHi Hannah. There is a Common App form but professors can just send us a letter outside of the Common App. We don't require the form.
Dec 04, 20:27:58Participant -> Student_Laurenhow convenient is it getting to and from NYC?
Student_Lauren -> ParticpantA lot of people that I know travel to and from the city frequently. Amtrak is the most utilized service, and it is pretty cheap to use. The amtrak station right in Saratoga is the one that most people use, and for breaks it is easy to hop in someone's car if you know anyone going to the city as well.
Dec 04, 20:28:19Participant -> Admissions_MattDoes Skidmore offer assistance to first generation college students?
Admissions_Matt -> ParticpantHi Christian. I'm assuming you mean financial assistance. We guarantee to meet full financial need to all admitted applicants.
Dec 04, 20:29:11Student_Lauren -> EveryoneAs we wrap up, I just want to say that my email is ljackso2@skidmore.edu if you all have ANY questions about student life here. I went through the transfer process, so I know first hand how nerve wracking it can be. I am always available to help! Thank you for all of your questions!
Dec 04, 20:29:16Admissions_Matt -> EveryoneHey folks - thanks for your great questions. Feel free to follow up with me after tonight at mcohen@skidmore.edu.
Dec 04, 20:29:39Particpant -> Panelist(s)Thanks very much for taking the time to do this & have a nice night!
Dec 04, 20:29:43Particpant -> Panelist(s)Thank you both.
