--Les Quatre Saisons de la Kultur |
LES CENT ET UN ROBERT MACAIRE was published in Paris by Aubert et Cie
in 1840. In 101 lithographs, Honoré Daumier creates, explores
and expands upon the character of Robert Macaire. Originally a cut-throat
in a boulevard play, Macaire became in Daumier's hands (and in Philipon's
acid texts) the emblem of the pervasive dishonesty of the July monarchy.
,We see here, for example, Macaire as a Journalist who presents his editor
with an article that "rips to shreds" a new law. Upon being informed that
his journal is supposed to defend the law, he replies that he'll' touch
up the article and write a "frothy piece in favor of that very same law."
Or again, Macaire and his assistant Robert, establish a “société
du clystère” (an enema club) as a way of cleaning out the gullible
of their money under the guise of “phlanthropy.” The truculent Macaire
is the incarnation of the ruthless pursuit of money and advantage, all
perfectly acceptable in the atmosphere of “enrichissez-vous.”
