How to type foreign characters

On a Mac:

Hold down Option key and whatever comes after + at the same time, then let up and type whatever comes after the comma:

acute á, é, í, ó, ú Option + e, the letter

grave à, è, ù   Option + `, the letter

tilde ñ, Ñ Option + n, n

circumflex â, ê, î, ô, û Option + i, the letter

umlaut ï, ü, Ü Option + u, the letter

cedilla ç, Ç   Option + c or C

inverted ? ¿ Option + shift + ?

inverted ! ¡    Option + 1
